- well there are disadvantages and advantages to cloth diapers and disposable diapers. Like disposable diapers will cost you about $200 a month but they are good because they absorb more. cloth diapers you can buy like 10 but you still have to spend money to wash them and they absorb less. so i say go with the disposable diapers
- Go with the good old towelling nappies. Use nappy liners inside them to cut down on diaper rash and catch the poo to avoid staining the diapers. Always use bum cream (a zinc-based paste type). At night, use a "Baby Dry" with your nappy liner to keep baby feeling dry through the night. You will have to use plastic pants over them, but buy the type which lets air in, not the cheap plastic ones or you will find the baby gets diaper rash more easily. Ensure that you soak soiled diapers in Steri-Nappi to kill bacteria, sterilise and whiten them and rinse each nappy three times to get soap out completely. You will go through approx 15 per day, more at the beginning when your baby is newborn. Try to dry them in the sun, but don't wait until they are dried hard before you take them indoors. Fold them immediately and place them in a diaper holder for convenience and easy use. You can use plastic stays to keep the diaper in place instead of pins.
- Disposable diapers will cost you more in the long run. We're going with cloth. Some of the best brands are: Fuzzi Bunz: http://www.fuzzibunz.com/ Bum Genius: http://www.bumgenius.com/ Bummis: http://www.bummis.com/ Good for you for making such a good choice! The modern ones already come with snaps or velcro, so you don't have to use pins, and most of them don't even need a plastic cover.
- you get cloth diapers with velcro that dont require pins. I think a plastic cover is advisable as the baby's clothes will also get wet everytime the baby pees.
- You can use either wool or fleece covers that are waterproof but breathable. Wool takes a little extra care, but it's worth it. My personal favorite diapers are Green Acre Designs fleece pocket diapers. (bumGenius and Fuzzi Bunz are pocket diapers, too.) The microfleece inside against your baby's skin keeps the skin dry (kinda like the dry weave on maxi pads) and the thicker fleece on the outside is waterproof but breathable. And since it's a pocket diaper you can stuff it with whatever you need for the right amount of absorbency. (Microfiber inserts, super absorbent hemp doublers, a prefold, etc.). You can use just one microfiber insert during the day when you'll be changing frequently, or use two for more absorbency for car rides, or use two more expensive but much, MUCH more absorbent hemp inserts at night. They're totally customizable. :-) If you don't have much to spend you can get prefolds or flats and use a Snappi (instead of pins) and a diaper wrap that uses velcro. Or if can afford to, there are cloth diapers that go on just like disposables with either velcro or snaps. If you don't mind buying used diapers (all but two of mine are used) you can save a lot of money. You can buy used diapers at http://www.diaperpin.com (which has a ton of information, too), http://www.diaperswappers.com , and http://www.diapertraders.com .
