Diapers Q&A

Help with cloth diapering, how to tell if they fit right? any tips?

(repost 4 more help) i've always planned to cloth diaper, but i feel so overwhelmed! at first, everything seemed too big for my baby, but now she's already outgrown some of the cloth dipes i had gotten. i used one once (a knicker nappies pocket diaper) and it leaked SO bad, urine up her whole back. it was because the lining wasn't tucked in & it wicked, but with the insert i couldn't get everything tucked in. the inserts are so bulky on such a little one! i still want to try it, though. i HATE using disposables.they smell so stinky--all chemical-y; the ones that i've found that don't leak poo everywhere smell the worst!! ugh! and they leave bad marks all over my baby & just seem so uncomfy (i hated wearing pads after the birth for so many weeks--i can't imagine having to wear something similar for YEARS!) anyway, i have a few one size pocket dipes (a baby kanga, a bum genius, and a happy heiney) and a lot of covers... anytips for me?? how are they supposed to fit? btw, i've been shopping for new from this site: http://clothdiaperoutlet.com/ how do you think it compares? is it a decent source? i've gotten a lot of used covers, though, in all sizes. (about a dozen each size) are flat prefolds good inside those? do you just lay them in the middle where you want absorbency? what about poo? it seems it would just run off the liner & out the leg hole, does it?? btw, i have a 3 month old, about 15 lbs. some i could barely velcro shut, so i assumed those were outgrown already, but just a few weeks prior they seemed too big! she did grow fast... they don't seem to fit snug around the legs... btw, whats UCPF ? somethign about prefolds?

  1. I really like the cloth diapers, like bumgenius, that have a velcro strap. At first you can be a little scared that you are putting them too tight, but you usually arent... they are very flexible so, don't feel bad about it. Tighten those suckers up. For All In One diapers, they tend to run true to pound size suggestions from my experience so, I'd go by that. However, when usuing fitteds and covers, I've had to buy the covers sometimes in the next size up so they would fit over the fitted. Good for you for giving them a try! I love cloth diapers!
  2. I use the OS bum genius and love those...but surprisingly, I love my prefolds even more! I use the UCPF in premiums and they last a while, although they are bulky. Honestly though, if you want help with cloth diapers, you should consider joining diaperswappers.com, a forum for cding mothers. The other mamas on there are so helpful and kind. As to the fit...they should fit the way a disposable fits...just underneath the bellybutton with the leg bands snug but not too tight. If you join diaperswappers, you can post pictures and the mamas on there will be happy to tell you if it fits right! BTW..what makes you think they're not fitting right? Are they leaking? UCPF - unbleached chinese prefolds. They are affordable and absorbent when used with a doubler. I use a small microfiber towel folded up in there with a rectangular piece of fleece to keep baby feeling dry.
  3. I love my BumGenius pockets! They are genius! One thing that surprised me about cloth diapers is the low rise, especially compared to disposables. It's a matter of preference and whether or not a certain diaper works with your unique baby. Some brands tend to fit skinny babies better, some brands tend to fit chunky babies better, but you really have to experiment. I'm a huge fan of prefolds for that reason. You can just fold them up the way your baby needs them. I use a Snappi to help contain poo. If you use a "bikini twist" fold, you end up with these little pockets that contain poop really well. It sounds like you need to fold up your insert when you use the Knicker Nappies diaper. I'm not familiar with that brand, but if you can't stuff the inserts in, then fold them up--fold in front for a boy, back for a girl. UPCF = Unbleached Chinese PreFolds Indian prefolds are great too
