What is the point of using Soakers?
Ok Im looking into cloth diapering for my son (to be born soon!). I bought some white cloth diapers at babies r us - just the regular white pads that Im somehow supposed to fold over him and secure with safety pins I guess. I saw these wool soakers online as well. What are they supposed to do? Are they used OVER the cloth diapers to soak up excess or are they used alone? Any one have any ideas on CHEAP cloth diapers I can buy?

- If you want to go cheap but have good quality, get 2 dozen prefolds (unbleached Chinese or Indian prefolds are great, and either buy snappis or pins). The ones you can buy at stores (Gerber brands, etc.) do not absorb well at all. Soakers (fleece or wool) do go over the diapers and help contain the wetness a bit longer than going without one. You can also buy PUL covers, which are great but not as breathable as wool and fleece, which can lead to rashes if your baby is sensitive. I love my prefolds (takes a bit to learn how to fold them) and usually use them with pins. I either put a fleece soaker over them or wool shorties for my DS to toddle around in. Wool and fleece are also great for nighttime or naptime use!
- All cloth diapers require a water resistant cover of some type. It used to be all prefolds and rubber pants, but now there are a world of options. Wool soakers do go over prefolds, and other kinds of diapers. They are waterproof-ish while still allowing the baby's skin to breath. They can be made from old sweaters/blankets if you can sew. You can also use old receiving blankets to make cloth diapers like prefolds and other forms. As for what is cheap it depends on a lot of things.
