Diapers Q&A

gdiapers/alternatives/septic...??

OKAY SOOOO. I am commited to going "green" with this baby {breast feeding, feeding it organic food ect.} and I need a good alternative for diapers that won't hurt the earth...so i heard about gdiapers [gdiapers have reusable shells and biodegradable flushable liners... http://www.gdiapers.com/ ] and I would really love to give them a try but I have a septic system...I have done some research on them and found them and found that it isnt good to use them right away because of how much i would be flushing away.... So,I was just wondering if anyone knew of any good alternatives to gdiapers something that is not harmful to the enviornment or my the baby =] I know I could use cloth diapers but a girlfriend of mine had a bad experience with them in the past and I am hesitant to use them... thankyou! =]

  1. I was reading up on gdiapers and it doesnt matter if you cant flush them because they are still biodegradable. "If you can’t flush? it’s ok to toss the refills because everything that goes into the refills is reabsorbed by the planet. It's very cool. Or garden compost the wet ones. They’ll break down in 50-150 days." http://www.diapers.com/Shop/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=5990&From=Brand so you should be okay with those. other than biodegradable your only other options are regular diapers (at least for the first couple of months) or cloth...but like you already said those are not what you are trying to go for. good Luck.
  2. Wow! What will they think of next! The website said you could flush or toss them so I'm thinking you could just throw them away & they will decompose rapidly in a landfill. I personally used alot of cloth diapers with all my kids. For some reason the disposables always made them break out. Soi I only used disposables when they went some where.
  3. I wouldn't bother with the Gdiapers. They cost a fortune and they aren't safe for septic tanks from my understanding.. they also aren't as great as they talk about, (fall apart and such) I'd try cloth if you wanna go green. my first was cloth diapered, and i'm pregnant now and this one will be cloth diapered from birth. I've never had any problems with them. Maybe you need to do more research on Cloth. I have no idea what your friend used, (or how far in the past)but there's SO MANY different kinds of diapers out there and things have changed so much that it's VERY possible that something didn't work for your friend and her baby doesn't mean it won't work for you. Personally, I'd go check out Diaperswappers.com they have plenty of message boards with lots of people that could answer just about any question you got. :)they also sell/buy/trade diapers there to save you money on them. It's a awesome place.. Good for you for going green!
  4. I'm not a septic system expert, but I do have some info to share with you about another brand of cloth diapers. Bummis - This is a cotton diapering kit that comes with an adorable outer pant similar to gDiapers. (The bamboozled fitted diaper is my favorite!) The bio-soft liner is supposed to break down in a septic tank in 20 days. http://www.babyearth.com/bummis-cotton-diapering-kit-stage-1.html Tender Care/Tushies wipes are septic tank safe too.
  5. Gdiapers arent actually as "green" as you may think. Theres alot of waste in their processing. Cloth is by far the better choice. Dont let someone else's bad experience spoil it for you. Frankly most bad cloth diaper experiences come from using the wrong diaper for your needs. I hate chinese prefolds... you know they ones you fold and use a pin.. terrible. I recommend Tiny Tush Elites. These are so great because they are adjustable to use from birth to 35 pounds, saving both time and energy in manufacturing, they are available with an out pvc shell (I have been told by experts that this is 90% post consumer waste) or you can get it in organic fabric. The inner parts are fantastic too... its a pocket diaper so you end up putting in inserts. Never once, with 4 kids, did I have a leak! or diaper rash! Also, there is a liner from tiny tush which is made from rice paper and is septic safe! They run about $20 ish per diaper (including shell and liner) but this is not much considering that you can use the same diaper for all their diapering needs! I have also reused those diapers for my subsequent kids. It cost me $500 for my oldests diapers but I havent had to buy any at all for my other kids making it really like I spent only $125 for all my diapers for each child!! I recommend any pocket diaper that adjusts this way, I just happened to like tiny tush the best. These diapers dry really really fast compared to all in ones and you can add in extra inserts when they are older or over night. This seems to be the cheapest site and includes the insert: http://www.keenbambino.com/sportituelon.html Here is the link to the liners which are septic safe and made from rice so they are very eco friendly: http://www.tinytush.com/Disposable-Diaper-Liners_p_42-572.html
