Can you feed a 3month old anything other than formula?
My 3 month old son (born april 19th) had constipation about 2 months ago and my doctor told us to feed him alittle watered down apple juice. Well he aquired a taste for it and now loves it and cries for at least one bottle of juice daily and wont calm down until he tastes the juice. My husband has gave him unwatered down juice on accident and he loves that also but 95% of the time we water it down. He gets a couple messy diapers but overall it doesnt seem to be a problem. Is this ok? or are we harming him in anyway. Has anyone else fed thier 3 month old things other than milk (formula)? Also he does not like the baby puddings, cereal or apple sause but loves adult banana pudding either in tiny spoonfulls or put into a warm milk bottle and mixed up. Is this harmfull? Please help us. I am sure it is ok but just wondering.

- Baby's digestive system is not developed enough. The American Society of Pediatrics recommends nothing but formula or breastmilk until 6 months.
- My daughter got watered down apple juice as well when she was that young. As long as the pedi says its okay, I wouldnt worry about it. My daughters 8 months now and completely fine... and she LOVES baby applesauce. I wouldn't suggest anything else though (or more than two ounces of applejuice a day) unless you run it by your pedi first.
- dont worry It all goes by how HE is. Ant 3 months my son was eating soft table food and watered down juice. My doctor said he is very healy and the happiest baby she deals with. Give him what he wants
- well always try to water down the juice, im not a Dr. but if hes still alive and healthy and not sick it dont seem to be hurting him in anyway but do try to limite it to a bottle a day and may be give him half in the morning half in the evening and follow it with just water or formula ! sugar is not go for babys could cause serious health issues in the future good luck
- Too much sugar! At this age all the calories and nutrition your son needs come from milk, formula or breast only! The caloires and sugar, over a long period of time, could potentially be harmful to your baby with risks such as childhood diabetis and childhood obesity. He is 3 months old, lets not let him get the upper hand just yet. Instead of using apple juice, try watering down his formula slightly, or giving him and ounce to an ounce and a hlaf of water a day. If plain water does not work, my doctor reccomends KARO syrup (found in the baking goods isle at wal-mart) Mix 1/2 oz. of Karo with an ounce of water, and it should loosen him up. as for now, your son should not recieve solids until around 5 1/2- 6 months, and no juice until then either! Good luck and happy parenting!
- I have three children. The first, I completely listened to the doctor about her feeding. She only had formula until she was 6 months old. She will never have a weight problem, but I almost starved her to death. She had six teeth before I fed her baby food apple sauce, how stupid was that? My second child was born 11 months to the day later, quite by accident! He got the cereal the third week! He slept and was a much happier baby. By the third, you realize that they came to live with you and you know best what they need. No one should tell you how to feed your baby, only you can determine when you need to introduce something new. Go with what feels right.
- In short, no. Your doctor told you to give him the juice because of a medical problem, and that is the only reason it should be given to him. His stomach is not yet ready to handle solid foods of any sort. Talk to your pediatrician if you really think you need to start him on solids, but don't do it before hand. As for doing it just because he cries until he gets his way--you are his mother! It is your job to do what's best for your son NO MATTER WHAT. He will get over it if you don't give in. However, if you continue in this vein (giving him whatever he wants just so he'll be quiet or good) then you are going to wind up with a child that will not listen to anyone. Is t hat really what you want?
- adult banana pudding is not a good thing 2 give him.
- You know I wouldn't worry to much about it, even though it is not suggested and if you can hold it off you should then his digestive system can become stronger, but back in the day the started solids around 3 months ans now they start it off around 4 - 6months.
- Watered down apple juice if fine, as long as it doesn't have added sugar. It's not a great idea to be feeding him adult anything at this point. Food intended for adults and older children have added ingredients that aren't good for an infant. Make sure you don't give him anything with honey in it....honey can harm an infant. Try giving him the infant oatmeal with homemade applesauce mixed in.....or just plain homemade applesauce. (Core, peel, and cut up apples; place them in a pot of water, boil down the water and apples until it is a good consistency to mash.) He may object to the infant food available in stores, but it really is the best for him. Keep trying. A baby won't starve themselves. He will eventually learn to like the healthy foods.
- Both of my kids had this problem. My doctor recommended infant pear juice. It worked miracles. I kept my nephew and kept pear juice and karo syrup (doc recommended a little more than teaspoon in formula when not giving juice, every so often, not every bottle) stocked in my cabinets. I also started both of mine on infant oatmeal (little in a bottle, like a teaspoon or so) at 3-4 months to help them sleep. Many people do not think that it is a good thing to do, but it never hurt my kids. It is not going to hurt him to have juice. Many pediatricians have different opinions on these things. When my oldest was 3 months old, my mother-in-law fed him mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and banana pudding and he slept all night.
- it is perfectly fine..my pediatrician told me to start giving my son juice and water in a bottle..and he loves it..you are not harming him at all..but i wouldnt start giving the puddings and cereal till about 4-5 months old. just b.c of the digestive system..good luck..
- The only thing you are doing is just giving him things his body can't quite digest yet. Don't give him any adult food yet. Water down (50/50) his juice and don't give him more than 3-4 oz total in one day. If you can, give him 2oz at a time twice a day. He'll enjoy the extra treat. As far as the cereal, how are you preparing it? For that young of a child, you need to make it quite milky. Make sure you're mixing it with formula. You can put it in his milk bottles if you think he's hungry enough for it. Otherwise, keep on with just the formula and no more than 4oz of juice per day. I gave my daughter juice at this age in a bottle and she's 15 months and loves juice. Don't give him applesauce by itself right now. His tastebuds are too sensitive for this. If you want to give him some, mix it in some cereal w/formula. He should like that. You can also try pears. But I wouldn't give him too much of the reg. baby food yet. Maybe just try it here and there. Once he hits 4-4 1/2 months, you can. I started with fruits and then yellow veggies, then green ones. Good luck! actionjackson- you say too much sugar and calories??? What's with these ppl saying kayro syrup???? Dont' your drs tell you that kayro syrup is the worst thing for a baby?
