Diapers Q&A

How many bowel movements is normal for a 9 month old?

My son has 2 to 3 poopy diapers daily (plus the 'wet' only ones) Is this normal? He is eating jarred baby food, cereal, some table/finger foods and formula daily

  1. it depends on what you feed him really.. if you are feeding him table food already then yes it could be normal... if your baby is still taking in infant cereal and formula that it kinda sounds a bit much.
  2. It depends on what kind of movements, if they are really loose or watery, then you need to change something in his diet. Also, is this all the time or did he just start having them? If he always does this, and it didn't just start overnight, then I would say he is fine. As he grows, his bowel system will become more regular and he will start to have a pattern.
  3. It really all depends on how he's eating...how many times a day does he get solids...is he formula or breast fed? My son is breast fed and has solids 3 times a day plus some finger foods at each meal and a snack of finger foods (gerber puffs normally). He normally hows a bowel movement 1 to 2 times a day, but has had more in the same day..he's also gone a day or 2 without one before. I'd say if you get really concerned over it, call his pedi during office hours and ask to speak with a nurse. They're used to all sorts of questions from new parents.
