Diapers Q&A

cloth diapering moms?

I have an 8 month old in diapers and recently found out there is another baby on the way! I use the bum genius one size diapers, and was wondering how many I will need to diaper both babies. Thanks!!

  1. I only used cloth for my first. Once I learned another was on the way, I knew it would be a LOT less work to use disposables. That said -- each baby should have 3 dozen diapers in order that you not run out of fresh ones every day. I love the name "bum genius" ! I had to ask a nurse at the hospital "How do I make this huge square of cloth fit that tiny little behind?" LOL
  2. whatever number you used for your baby as a newborn plus another 5-6 per day for the older child. My guess would be 15-18 per day, so you will want to have at least 30, and wash a load every day.
  3. I use those too. I have 20 for my 13 month old and do laundry every two days and never run out of clean diapers. Since newborms will use more maybe 40 would be a good number.
  4. it really depends on the ages of the children and how much you plan to use disposables if at all. A newborn goes through many diapers a day, but a 1.5 yo baby doesn't. I am CDing twins, and I have two dozen and I do laundry every other day. It really depends on how often you want to do laundry, if you plan on using disposable diapers at night, will you use disposables when you go out? two dozen works for us, but we used disposables at night when they were really little. now at 12 weeks old, 2 dozen will last us every other day of laundry. I'm even thinking of adding another dozen so I can push the stretch out longer. Also keep in mind many babies don't fit into bum genius at birth, they have to grow into it. My babies were 6 lbs and were on XS Fuzzi Bunz and still fit into those at 12 weeks and 11 pounds. It may be worth it to pick up a dozen of those, or nb disposable diapers until the BG diapers fit.
  5. You need about 2-3 dozen diapers for each child, but please be aware that even though BG says it's one size, it might not fit baby at first. Have you considered prefolds? I love them. You can get the infant or newborn size, and when they outgrow them, you can use them as burp clothes. I have heard only good things about the ones from greenmountaindiapers.com.
  6. I also use the bumgenius 3.0s and I have an older child; we started cloth diapering when she was 18 months! I have 12, and that works just fine for now. I know I'll need to get more when we have another child. The site I buy from recommends 24 per newborn. So I'd say get as many as you need to add up to 3 dozen or so, maybe even more. I also agree with the poster about your infant maybe being too little for the 3.0s at first. Since my daughter wasn't cloth diapered when she was born I really can't say for sure. I know the Kissaluvs fitteds size 0 are supposed to be great for tiny babies as small as 5 lbs. Maybe check those out? Good luck and congratulations!!!
  7. If you're willing to wash a load of diapers every day, you could get by with 18 diapers (6 for the toddler, 12 for the newborn). Two dozen would definitely get you through a day -- even if one of them had a tummy bug.
  8. This really depends on how many diapers your babies use per day and how often you want to wash. I wash every 3 days and my daughter used 15 diapers a day when she was small so I had over 40 diapers! I would suggest that you have 36 diapers minimum. With two little ones you may end up missing your diaper cleaning duties sometimes! I would try to wash every two days though if you can.
