What options are there as for keeping my dog from bleeding everywhere besides diapers?
I have a chihuahua that just went into heat & she is only 4lbs so even the smallest size dog diaper falls off. Is there any other thing that I can try to keep her from bleeding everywhere? I seen some people say something about going to the vet to get a shot or a pill that stops them from bleeding. Is this true? thank you. - Get her fixed
- I'm not sure about that but my suggestion is to have her spayed.
- yeah go to the vet and say this.... "I WOULD LIKE MY DOG TO BE SPAYED!!!!" EDIT: Lynnly, are you serious, we don't think we are everyone's parents, we just think that to be a GOOD OWNER you should eliminate the chance of her bringing pups into a world already with too many dogs.... hmmm yeah its not that hard...
- Spaying always stops the bleeding.
- SPAY.... She is way too small to get pregnant, and may have severe complications from pregnancy & delivery if she does. Many Chi's need c-sections, which can cost thousands of $$$... Until she is spayed, newborn diapers may work. I used my son's pull-ups on my dog before she was spayed, and they are cheaper.
- Get her spayed! It's so much easier and cheaper than not.
- I agree... getting her spayed will stop this,
- Have her spayed. There are enough homeless pets out there waiting for second chances at life. I don't know of anything other than diapers to keep her from bleeding everywhere, keep her in a crate, keep in mind you'll have to let her out a lot and keep her well exercised.
- That's easy. Get her spayed. I wouldn't breed a dog that small.
- Make your own diapers out of gauss
- DARN IT GET THAT GIRL SOME TAMPONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LOL but really there is nothing much you can do but spay her.
- 4 lbs? Try a band-aid.
- Okay in a perfect world she would have been spayed before her first heat cycle- it greatly reduces the future risk of mammary cancer. However- I would now wait for 2weeks past externaly bleeding stops before I would have her spayed- less blood loss. I would ask your vet about a hormone shot- and also make sure that a GREAT vet does her spay- she is small and needs to be on and off the sx. table as fast and as safe as possible.
- Lauren K, I am not going to say "have her spayed" like all these other people on this site that think they are everyone's parents! My dog is a female Cavalier who was just in heat. She only weighs 10pounds and has the tiniest butt! So I went out and bout her size one luvs baby diapers, and they fit her perfect, I just cut holes for her tail and they worked great. For a chihuahua I would get a pack out new born baby diapers and try it out. I got a pack of 48 for $7!!! Good luck, I hope this helped a bit!
- Easiest thing would be to spay her, this will stop the heat cycles for good and no more bleeding... good luck if you do not want her to have puppies, the best thing is to spay, pills and shots are a temp fix, and the dogs should not be given the meds over and over, it is easier and safer and cheaper in the long run to spay the little dog...she is so tiny, it would not be good to let her breed anyway. and everyone has their opinion.....we are all here to give our opinions, and everywhere is entitled to theirs...
- There are pants for dogs in heat--like underwear. You put a special pad or a pantiliner in them. There's a hole for the tail and generally they are pretty comfortable for the dog. Google "bi***es britches" and you should find a few sources. I found one on www.allpetsconsidered.com. They come in all sizes--even for dogs up to 5 pounds. These WON'T prevent a mating though so you still have to be careful. Good news is that the bleeding or "flagging" won't long for too long--it should start to taper off soon. I had one very, very clean girl who never left a spot and I had another who was so dirty that I had to bathe her every few days to keep the smell down, because she didn't take care of herself. I agree with others though that she is very small to breed. It's just too hazardous to keep her intact. Heaven forbid that she sneak out (and girls in heat are not the sweet things we're used too--they are cranky and have only one thing on their minds) and get tied with even a 7 pound dog. A few years ago, the #1 AKC chihuahua in the country was very small but couldn't be bred--although beautiful, she wasn't big enough to have puppies healthily. Hope this helps and good luck!
- Sorry for all the rude replies you are getting! Sheesh! Why don't you all SPAY yourselves instead of bringing more children into a world with supposed "overpopulation"! Anyways, you can't spay while she is in heat anyways. You'd have to wait till she is finished. For my dog we never used the dog diapers, we bought real diapers and cut a hold for the tail to go through. Works great, is cheaper, and will come in smaller size for you. Other than diapers, you really just have to let them spend most of their time outside for now. Just make sure you are out there with her sometimes too and can play with her and provide her with plenty of cool water. Then after all of this if you don't want to deal with it again you can get her fixed. But you won't be sent to hell if you don't. Registration fees are less though. But these same people who are condemning you about your dog probably would have no qualms about killing their own babies. I get so tired of the morality police. Good luck!
