Diapers Q&A

What to do about my older dog's new potty trouble?

I have a ten year old Samoyed girl and within the past month or so she's only been barking to go outside about half the times she has to go. What can we do? You can't put a diaper on a dog, can you?

  1. they do make diapers for dogs, but instead of that why are you waiting for her to bark I bet when she was a young pup you didnt wait for her to bark, I bet you just let her out every hour or so, try doing that dont give her the chance to go in the house
  2. Lol, I dont think that their are dog diapers, at least I dont think so. Could you imagine how ridiculous that would look. Chances are that the dog would not even go when it wears it, which you might think is a good thing, but holding it for to long could cause internal damage. I would suggest that you begin to crate train, because its never to late to crate train. I listed some crate training sites in the sources to get you started.
  3. Yes, you can put a diaper on a dog. However, this may be a sign of a health problem (bladder infection, for example). You should seek your vets advice before deciding on a course of action. 10 years isn't that old, but it is still old. Some dogs (and humans) can develop these sorts of problems when they get older. However, this is less likely than a health problem. If it doesn't appear to have a cause, you may need to start training the dog over again (and make sure you clean the spots where it went with specialty cleaners like Simple Solutions; you need to get undetectable traces of the smell out).
  4. when you're 70 years old (in human years), let's see if you ask the same question !
  5. Yes, you can get doggie diapers; I had to use them for my 16 yr. old poodle at night, because she would wet the bed (she slept on my pillow, so that was a bit of a shock). But first, you should have her vet check for bladder infection or even bladder stones. It's sometimes hard to tell these things yourself, until the dog is in pain--and the vet is closed for the weekend. There is also a pill, diethylstilbestrol (I think that's how ya spell it), to help incontinent females. My sis's pit bull took it when she was in her teens.
