Diapers Q&A

Disabled dog, incontinent both ways. Tips?

Our 11 yr old dog had a herniated disc and surgery. Recovered then regressed. Now, unable to walk more than a few steps without assistance. Has begun to urinate and defecate in his bed, or anywhere else and will then smear it while trying to move around. We now have him outside, but that still doesn't do much for his bedding. Any suggestions? We are trying not to euthanize him. I've seen dog diapers but not for poop.

  1. well my moms friend had a dog like that and she put it down because of it's discomfort but if there is someway to cure it definetely do that. but anyway it's down to you really.
  2. This is a website for the disable elderly dogs-http://www.petdiapers.com/ they have doggy diapers for exactly what your looking for, holds the deification and all. Good Luck to him.
  3. Ya know, I'll go to almost any lengths to save a dog, but I really think we're looking at a quality of life issue here. Do you REALLY think this situation is fair to the dog? He can't walk, he's always filthy, and now he's been kicked out of the house and isolated from his family. This is no sort of a life. It's time to let him go.
  4. A disabled dog should not be stuck outside because of incontinence. as a better option.. make the dog an area that is easy to clean.. get bedding that is easy to clean, some bed pads or disposable puppy pads are an option.. have old blankets to rotate. Use diapers to help control some of the mess. Also talk to a groomer about trimming him for sanitary reasons. If its too much work for you to clean up after an incontinent dog, then please do him a favor and have him euthanized.
  5. wow, i know what its like to have a disabled dog. my dog just passed away because he had cancer. it started at his leg so we had to amputate it but it had already spread. i dont think yahoo answers will halp you much with a question like this, i say go to the vet
  6. go to http://smallpawsrescue.org They recently had two dogs with similar situations and the volunteer foster families will be able to answer your questions from an experienced position. I would like to add that 'incontinent' dogs need their humans to manually express their bowels and bladder on a schedule, and then there will be no accidents. It isn't that your dog has no control over his bowels or bladder, it is that his bowels and bladder is overflowing and that is what is coming out. If you learn to express these and do so several times a day, your dog can live an absolutely normal life with your family. There is no reason to put your dog down, with a little extra effort he can be a loving member of your family for hte rest of his natural life.
  7. My dog got Proin for incontinence. We also used an old bath towel, put it under the dogs belly, held an end in each hand, and lifted the dog to help him walk.
  8. I'm sorry for your dog but there comes a time when euthanizeion is the answer dogs do not like to lay in their waste anymore than we would, think about that and when the end comes have a friend take your dog to the vet
  9. Disabled dog put outside? What are you going to do this winter? Are you going to diligently change diapers? Time to do the right thing for this old boy.
  10. Your vet may find a steroid shot is in order to help with disc problem. there are absolutley doggie diapers to manage both issues. to assist the dog in getting up-you can roll up a towel & place it under hind end to help gently lift the animal up. Now that the dog is relegated to the outdoors, consider disposable padding for the bedding(large pee pads over it) Might be time to discuss with family & vet "quality of life issues"Herniated discs are quite painful as evidenced by dog unable to even get up.
