Diapers Q&A

Whats your experience with Cloth Diapers? Which is best? ?

My husband and I are trying to start a family. I want to start preparing now and finding out the facts before we have a child. We are interested in using cloth diapers. I am staying at home so washing wont be an issue. We want to try to save money and help the environment. So if you have used cloth diapers I would like to know about your experience and which cloth diapers you prefer and why??? Also if you have any other money saving suggestions that would be great.

  1. hello, well i used cloth diapers for my 1st baby & then when i had my 2nd child pampers came out & of course i loved using them because i could get them easily whenever i wanted to. but today's economy is awful so it really is your choice even though u say it's no problem washing them it does cost u money to use the detergeant & bleach & electricity & then comes the dryer. so i think it's kind of even with disposable diapers. try it for awhile & see if it's really a solution money wise. bb
  2. Good choice - cloth in the long run is much cheaper, can be a bit expensive at first to start up. There are so many choices now but we prefer the new "pocket" diapers. It is comprised of a diaper shell and inserts that you stuff to customize your absorbency. Our favorites are made by Blueberry and BumGenius. We use the BumGenius 3.0's and Blueberry sized side-snap diapers. BumGenius are actually 3 sizes in one so they last a long time - they say 8 pounds to 30 pounds but I didn't put them on Elyse until she was about 12 pounds, she's a slender baby. Here are some links to read up on the different types of diapering systems that are available these days - good luck and happy shopping! http://www.cottonbabies.com http://www.blueberrydiapers.com http://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/basics.htm
  3. It IS cheaper! Even more so if you have more than one child because you can keep using them! We use pocket diapers with our son. I like Fuuzi Bunz. I buy them here: http://www.fuzzibunzseconds.net/store/Default.asp And inserts from: http://www.cottonbabies.com/ I like them because they're pretty easy and fit for a long time. My husband even likes them! The other thing I do that really saves money is breastfeed. It's pretty much free! I did get a manual pump for when I'm not at home and a few bottles. Still, way cheaper than formula!
  4. My mom used cloth diapers with me. She said it was good because it was less wasteful, but the cleaning really does take a long time. She used plain cloth diapers, you can get them almost anywhere. She did, however, buy disposables for when she went out/on vacation. Hope this helps, good luck! :)
  5. We are cloth diapering our 18 month old still. We started when she was 3 months old and I will NEVER use a disposable on her again. First off, cloth diapering is way, way cheaper than disposables are. You will save over $1, 000 on your first child and even more on subsequent babies, since you can re-use your cloth diapers for you following children. Yes, you will need to wash diapers, and use some detergent, but this cost will only come out to $200 total over the 2 years your baby will be in diapers. We have tried many diaper types and brands. Our favourite daytime diapers are bumGenius one-size diapers. Our dayhome uses these with no problems also. These diapers have a waterproof outer, with micro-suede "stay dry" interior and you stuff an absorbent pad inside the two layers. These diapers are great because you can vary the material you stuff inside (hemp and bamboo are the most absorbent), vary the amount of stuffers (additional inserts for naps) and because the absorbent inserts come out the diapers clean easier and dry faster. For nights we like fitted diapers with wool covers. Our favourite diapers are Muttaquin 3SRs and Goodmamas. Both are very absorbent and are one-size diapers to grow with your baby. We use Sckoon and Sugar Peas wool covers over the diapers because they are a natural breathable fabric that helps keep your baby cool and comfortable all night, without leaking. We also breast feed and made our own baby food --- two more things that save money.
