Diapers Q&A

What diaper pail do you use for cloth diapers?

I have been cloth diapering exclusively for 8 months. I use a blue and white Cosco diaper pail with a cloth liner inside. This worked great when his diapers were smaller, but now the pail fills up long before I'm ready to wash diapers. I know many families use a 13 gallon garbage can, but will this keep in odor? What diaper pails do you use? I'm concerned that diaper pails intended for paper diapers will have too small an opening for my diapers. Also, I do not want to have to use any type of disposable liner or bag for the diaper pail.

  1. i use the little one and do diapers every 2 days otherwise they can get mildewed. and my little one is 15 months
  2. I don't use a bucket for nappies. All the ones in our local shops had lids that any self respecting toddler would pull off and drown in. So we bought a big tub that most people use for drinks. It has a proper screw top lid and we just didn't attach the tap bit. No kid is going to get into that. And no smell is getting out. (So far)
  3. We have one of those plastic storage boxes that people store holiday decorations in. We have a 26 gallon, I think.
  4. I know the diaper champ can be used with cloth diapers. I think it's pretty good on odor control.
  5. Have you looked into the Diaper Champ? We use it for disposable diapers. But, the opening is most like big enough for your diapers. And, you can use any kind of trash bag with it. However, it isn't the best for keeping out odors. It helps, but doesn't completely seal them in.
  6. Hi, I use the same diaper pail in each of our 2 bathrooms, and I have a tall, silver garbage can with a pull out bucket-type insert and a step-to-open lid. I use a Bummis washable liner in each of the pails. Multiple pails means it's faster to get dirty dipes where they need to go. Odor is fine as long as the lids are all the way closed and it's even better if there are a few drops of tea tree oil or lavendar in there. Good luck! And congrats on sticking with cloth!
  7. I'm an adult that has to wear diapers 24 / 7 due to a medical condition. Personally, I use a standard 13 gallon tall kitchen trashcan with the flip up lid. It's big enough to hold the diapers that I feed into it. No liner inside, just water with some white vinegar and some laundry detergent to help keep odors down. If you rinse the diapers first, even just the wet ones, then the odors aren't too bad at all. If you could find some way to put a seal on the lid of the trash can it should stop all odors. The white vinegar helps kill the bacteria that causes odors. I hope this has helped you. Good luck.
