Changing the size of your baby's diapers?
How do you know when you should switch your baby over to a different size diaper? Should you go on weight because I don't necessarily know what her exact weight is. She was 8lbs 8 1/2 oz last Friday at the doc and I still have her in huggies newborn diapers they go up to 10lbs.

- When the tabs get close to the sides. Don't go on weight.
- if they still fit leave her in them i just went by when they got snug i changed the size
- when my son wsa a baby- i went by the width of his thighs and his stomache. Even though he was little- these two factors let me know if he was gaining weight and if the pampers were too tight around these two areas. Don't go my how old the baby is 2-3 months etc- go by the width of his legs and stomache
- You should be able to tell by the fit. The weight is just a general guideline. When they seem to be more difficult to put on and/or they are leaving marks then you probably need to go up to the next larger size
- If the diapers arent cutting into her legs, dont look tight and you can fit your middle or pointerfinger under the tab and it feel comfortable no need to change the diaper. But trust me you'll know when its time. my son has been in size 3 diapers since he was 14 pounds. Wore newborn diapers until he was almost 2 months. Dont go by the weight thats only a guideline just like the clothing sizes are only guidelines. Go by your child.
- When they dig into the tops of her little thighs and seem tight around her belly. If you can barely close the tabs around the waist of the diaper or it starts leaking even though the diaper is not really wet,is another way to tell.
- You should change the size when the diapers are getting too small, if after you put them on they fit too tight or if they're leaking. You can always buy the next size and just try it on her, if they fit just right and doesn't leak they should be fine :)
- You don't have to change the size unless you just want to, or they start leaking or you can't close the diaper or it comes undone when they move.
- Buy a small package of the next size up and try them - you'll need them eventually anyway. Different brands (and different styles within a brand) fit differently. I barely used the Newborn diapers and almost immediately went up to a Size 1. There is always a little overlap on the weight for sizes, so you'll just have to see what fits better. They don't necessarily need to pop open or be tight for the next size to fit better.
- you should change the size when you see her belly getting to big to close the diaper or there are red marks on the inside of her thighs likes its to tight, poundage really doesn't mean a whole lots it just give you a guesstimate they have newborns going to 10 lbs the size one will be from 8- 12 or 14 lbs, i don't know how they determine the sizes but usually you can make a good judgment call, or try the next size up you know you'll need them eventually and if she leaks or falls outta them then you know its not time to change!!
- you go by the look on your baby if it look to tight around the legs and its getting harder to fit around her waist then you should go to the next size the next size may look a little big at first but she will grow into them the same as clothes you never go by age and weight for diapers or clothes. congrats to your new baby
- I dont go by the weight...my baby was in newborn swaddlers for a full month, not the week they suggest, and she was in the swaddler newborns until she hit 10 lbs. we put her into diapers for babies 12-17lbs or whatever when she was ten lbs and they fit great even though they are a little big...I went by how tight her diaper was becoming...note...when they are harder to do up and just look a little to tight go up to a size bigger.
- I always buy the next size up, you will have fewer leaks with a little bigger diaper. If you can pull the tabs on the front together to fasten so they meet you have a good size, if you can't you'll end up with a leaky diaper. The best ones are Huggies.
- If the tabs are too stretched it is time to switch OR if the are too snug through the bum area. If there isn't a little gap around the bum area poo will shoot up the back of the diaper and out every time the baby poops. Diapers should be somewhat loose not snug.
- don't go by the weight on the package. When the diaper seems to be getting snug then go up to the next size. good luck
