Diapers Q&A

Are baby diapers wasteful?

Disposable diapers dont bio-degrade, do they?

  1. no they are very bad cuz they put so much waste in our land fill
  2. no they dont, largely. and yes, they are wasteful. you could try reusable cloth diapers, as i was raised on. just use a little extra phosphate free detergent in the diaper wash.
  3. With the world's over-population problem, having a baby is wasteful. Who cares about the diapers?
  4. No they dont. I Do think they are wasteful now if i could only figure out how to use cloth ones.
  5. absolutely! i used cloth diapers on my kids by choice. on top of being environmentally friendly, my kids were potty-trained much earlier, so i used diapers for a shorter time. cloth diapers don't have a "stay dry lining", so the kids felt wet or dirty and didn't like it. much better all the way around, 'cos i had five boys!
  6. OK, here is the issue. Baby diapers do take up a lot of space in our landfills and dumps and all that, and we're left with tons of waste. Good thing we've been working a little bit on waste management over the years right? Ask yourself this though: Is it more wasteful to dispose of dirty diapers, or to contintually use water and electricity to run your washer and dryer because you now have extra laundry to do since you aren't using super absorbent disposable diapers? Sometimes people say that something isn't biodegradable because it takes a very long time for it to decompose, so it's degradability isn't useful to us. I think you should research brands of diapers that you plan to buy and find out if they're a little more eco friendly. While you're at it, pick up this book :
  7. the entire concepts of waste and "disposable" is absurdly pathogenic
  8. They are very much so wasteful! People are often caught in the convenience of disposable diapers, when in reality it takes less effort to just wash cloth diapers. Yes, you have to do some laundry. But you aren't running out to the store, and ruining the environment at the same time! Cloth diapers are better for the Earth, and much easier on the pocketbook as well! I also always assumed they were more comfortable for babies too, which to me was the bottom line.
  9. diapers do not degrade by them self it is a lot in the land fills i know it sounds old fashion but did you think of trying cloth diapers there not as bad as you think
  10. One has to take into account the extra water, electric, time, soap etc. that one uses with cloth diapers. I think that disposables will break down eventually, basically at the same rate other petroleum products do . I also think that they have changed the diapers over time to break down better. Cloth diapers can be reused but for how long. You also have to put rubber liners over them which probably break down slower than disposable diapers.
  11. No. I think that they do biodegrate. Because when I change the babies diapers they smell like they are already biodegrating because they stink rotten like dead animal meat flesh. This morning there was a fly crawling on the baby's diaper so that tells me it is attracting decomposition flies to lay maggot eggs on the diaper.
  12. I think there might be some biodegradable diapers out there. Cloth diapers today aren't bad. I used them for several months. They have great ones now--not the pin and plastic covers like when we were babies. I used Kushies and some others that were made by work at home moms. They were all in ones, and I just threw the whole thing in the wash. I do have to admit that I quit using them when my son started eating more solids. I had a hard time with really messy diapers, so switched to disposable. But, it was better for us financially to use cloth for the first 7 months and would have been better financially, and in every other way, if I could have handled it as he got older. This is for someone a few answers above me: it doesn't matter how much a diaper can hold; babies should be changed when they wet--it helps with potty training down the road, and mainly, it is healthier and more comfortable for that baby. How would you feel if you had to keep a wet diaper on just because it's not full yet??
  13. babies are wastful, they aren't prosumers at all
  14. Yes, they are. They don't biodegrade and they are NASTY!
