Diapers Q&A

My Dog Ate A Diaper?

Tonight, while I was working my dog apparently ate a soiled baby diaper. I don't mean that he ate the contents of the diaper, I mean that he ate the entire diaper. After reading on the internet, I have found mixed reactions to dogs eating diapers and I am wondering if I should be worried. The dog is old and has not adjusted well to having our son in the house, in fact we have been trying to place him for 4 months or so now as he as shown aggression towards him (growling, snarling, snapping etc). I am just sitting here seeing dollar signs flash in my eyes as I think about surgically removing a diaper from a dog I am growing to hate anyways. Anybody else have a dog eat a diaper, pass it, and be fine? P.S. to comments about the aggressiveness of the dog; during the day when the baby is awake, the dog is kept in the basement until we find a home. after our son goes to bed he gets to be let out. Because I "have something new to pay attention to"? I have a child..... not a playtoy. Excuse me that I don't want a dog that has decided he'd like to eat my child's face for breakfast. Last time I read through the question it was about if your dog was ok after eating a diaper... not a deathwatch 3000 "save the shelter dogs" campaign

  1. I think that you should call the vet 2morrow. He would know what to do. You also have other choices like putting the dog down, since you are growing less fond of it. You dont want to put your child in danger either.
  2. diapers has this chemical thing like pads you know that blue stuff take it to the vet
  3. i would think the dog would be fine if he chewed it enough to swallow it i would assume it will come out. i would call the vet though. good luck!!!!!!!!!!
  4. I'm sure that diapers are non toxic, because there is always a risk of a curious baby ripping one and eating tasting the stuffing. If a baby died from eating a diaper, then the company that manufactures the diapers would be sued a lot of money. I don't think that there is any need to call a vet just yet. None of my dogs have eaten diapers, but I have seen my neighbors dogs carry around and eat diapers that they've pulled out of people's garbage boxes, or found on the side of the road. There is no vet where I live, so my neighbors never take their dogs to get the diapers surgically removed. Their dogs haven't died from eating diapers, they just end up dying from being run over, or shot. If your dog starts acting weird, or sick, then you should call a vet, but I doubt that there will be any problems.
  5. If the dog shows signs of being sick (he didn't throw it up or poop it out), then you probably will have to have it removed or something, so I would just put the dog down. If the dog doesn't like your baby, you should DEFINITELY get rid of it. I would never let a snarling dog near my baby.
  6. you sound like you're going to make a really great parent! (not). the real question is; how long will it take you to start hating your kid?
  7. Have you ever seen what a diaper does when it has been on a child in the swimming pool or at the beach? You know, how it swells really big when it gets wet? Its actually little gel type crystals... That would be a huge concern to me, that would most likely kill the dog if its not surgically removed. However I dont KNOW that thats what will happen...but it would worry me. Even if it doesnt swell it could block him up. I would certainly call the vet TONIGHT. I understand what your saying about the dog, but please be a responsible owner and take care of him since he is still yours. EDIT: If you call tonight maybe the vet can suggest giving your dog something to make him vomit it up while its still in the stomach!!!
  8. I had a dog that would eat my work socks all the time. I used to have to hide them. He always passed them through all right though.
  9. It may pass, it may not. Some dogs digest things differently. You should take the dog to the vet, and probably have some x-rays done. And if you are looking to get rid of the dog, and it's shown aggression, please take it to an animal shelter. Let them know it's aggressive toward children. Don't give it to someone else. This dog is your responsibility. Remember that. You owe him the chance to be with a family who will love him NO MATTER WHAT. Since you obviously don't.
  10. I have not had a dog eat a diaper and pass it. I have not had a dog that I decided I didn't like anymore because I have something new in my life to pay attention to. I am sad that you would just be considering the cost of making sure this dog is healthy rather than being worried that there might be a problem with the dog. How long have you had this poor dog?
  11. Do you hate the dog enough to not feel bad if it dies? If you're not willing to pay for the vet to resolve this situation, then at least give the dog to someone who will - although I doubt that a rescue will take kindly to a dog with a free diaper.
  12. The dog might just be fine!!! You don't need to worry like crazy...that will only stress your poor doggy out. Try and calm down, and if your dog seems sick or abnormal...contact a vet!
  13. I remember reading somewhere that some of the absorbants used in some diapers are toxic. The diaper could also cause a blockage. An older dog that is not good with children will not likely "find another home".
  14. I don't know what kind of dog you have, but I have a lab and she has ate my sons diaper before. She was fine. I just watched to make sure she could still have a bowel movement. I did not let her eat until she had that first bowel movement tho, that could have blocked her up. But after she passed it, she was perfectly normal. And God only knows what else she has eaten :) And as far as your dog growling at your baby, and the peoples comments...My pets are my pride and joy, but when I had my son, thats when he became first in my life, and I am sure you are the same way. Any normal mother, like yourself, would rather get rid of a dog that growled or showed aggression towards your baby than risk it biting him one day. That doesn't mean you don't love your pet, it means you love your children more. Any true parent would know that!!!
  15. I've never had a dog eat a diaper...but I've heard of this. I would keep an eye on your dog to see if he is showing any signs of discomfort. I'm not sure what's inside diapers...but it can absorb a lot of fluid and swell up......you know...when a kid goes in the water with one on....it gets huge. So, I would worry the pieces of diaper would swell up like this in your dogs stomach or intestines. I would call your vet's office and ask them what you should do. They will know the best way to handle this. Good luck!
  16. I would call the vet asap. Diapers are not so good for stomaches. And depending on the brand it could vary on how many toxins are in the diaper. I had one of mine eat one when our 2 year old was younger and took him in to the vet, he was fine but I would still have yours checked. And maybe look into getting a diaper genie. Saves you from the smell of diapers in the trash and the dog from eating them. Ours has been a lifesaver! As far as your dogs aggresion goes, he is showing aggresion because you have shown him that the new baby has usurped his role. In a pack animals mentality which dogs are they all have roles. You gave his role to the new baby, he can be rehabbed from it if you are willing to put in the effort. And locking him in the basement is probably making him even more resentful to this new little creature you brought home without him knowing you were going to. A lot of dogs act up when new babies are born, cats as well. My newest dog just had pups 6 weeks ago and my oldest 2 have had to learn that the pups are here and to be kind. My suggestion if you are unable to put in the time for him to be rehabbed is to call a breed rescue and talk to them about them finding him a non infant home, or even seeing if it is all kids or just yours. Good luck!
