Diapers Q&A

Dog is leaking??

Okay...I have an 8 year old, female Doberman. She has been leaking urine for a few years now! She was on meds (Proin) from her vet. Recently they stopped working. After many trips to the vet, i am being told either to deal with it, or put her to sleep. I am told there is NO other medicine that will help her! I went online & found another all natural product called "leaks no more" ~ well, it doesn't work either! I have tried dog diapers & human diapers....but they don't stay on, they fall off right away when she sits down & stands up! I am desperate to find something to help her!! I do NOT want to put her to sleep! I mean if my son was "leaking" in bed, I wouldn't put him to sleep!! If anyone has any suggestions....PLEASE let me hear them!! I am already in the process of having all the carpet removed from my house (which is not even a year old), to have flooring that won't absorb the urine & odor! So as you can tell, I am desperate!! PLEASE HELP ME & MY LOVING POOCH!! oKAY...JUST CALLED A LOCAL ANIMAL HOSPITAL, THEY REASSURED ME THAT THERE IS OTHER OPTIONS FOR MY POOCH! SO SHE IS GOING TO A NEW VET AT 2:30 TODAY!! THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!

  1. Awww... that's sad. Could some kind of surgery help her?
  2. put the dog ONLY on an easy clean floor and get ready to clean, dont' want to clean, don't have the dog
  3. I would suggest seeing a holistic vet. They use vitamins and herbs that regular vets don't really understand. I don't know about your situation, but it is worth a try. Good luck!
  4. There is a surgery that can be performed for a dog with a weak bladder. you may want to find another vet and/or call around till you find on familiar with the surgery.
  5. I'm sorry to hear this, don't have any advice, sorry. I had a cat I had to put to sleep because she was leaking so bad.
  6. Unfortunalty incontinance is very common in female dogs especially if they were spayed at an early age. Your vet is basically correct there is not a whole lot you can dog about her leaking urine. Is she doing it all the time or mostly in her sleep. If she is mostly doing it in her sleep I recommend puting down a crib sized waterproof sheet or matress cover in her favorite place. If she is doing it all the time I know you said you have tried doggie diapers but have you tried the doggie panties that are used for female dogs in heat. They may require a bit of modification to cover the right place but they should stay on much better. Just make sure you change the pad often so she doesn't get urnine burn from it being against her skin.
  7. I have a 7 Y/O Dobie also on Proin and thank goodness it's working well. I got her spayed at 3 years old and in Dobies it's common to cause incontinance from this. One of the other treatments (which is less costly over time) is a hormone treatment for incontinant dogs. If your vet told you to deal with it or end it; you need a new vet, that's for sure. I'd get a second opinion and mention Hormone treatments. It's only a couple of shots and the problem goes away. This is the backup to Proin. At 8 years old, this dog has plenty of "GO" left. I've had dobies go 16 years. it's all in how you care for them. don't give up on her........ Best of luck and when I look at my "Daisy" today, I'll think of you and hope you find the treatment for her.
  8. I know this is going to sound off the wall, but you might want to try it. Try calling a chiropractor the specializes in animals, they might be able to tell if something on her spine is off alignment and could be pressing on the nerves that control the bladder. It is safe for the dog. Good luck
  9. Well, I am certainly glad you are not going to put your dog to sleep. I am afraid I cannot be of much help, but could you get a second opinion. Surely there is more than 1 vet available to you. Also ask your vet for a referral to a specialist vet in this area. If you are able to take up new carpet and replace it, I am under the assumption you can probably afford to take your dog to a specialist. I am sorry you are having this problem. Good luck, and I hope you and your dog both find some relief!
  10. Get a truck load of Nature's Miracle and stick with your dog. IMHO, the dog can be of excellent health and this is NOT a reason to put her down. Wishing you lotsa patience!!!! and don't give up on your dog! P.S. my girl has been leaking for years now due to messed up spay. I do not use any meds, or "diapers" for her. Only at times I feel sorry for her as she can be really embarrassed by the leaks.
  11. There could be several reasons that your pooch has a leaky bladder, so I believe there are more options then your vet is saying. I believe in holistic medicine and although the leak no more didn't work for you, there might be something else that will, especially if the cause doesn't match the remedy. This is often the case with homeopathic medicines, which leak no more is. Please read this article at Only Natural Pet Store and see if there is some information there that you can try. http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/KnowledgeBase/knowledgebasedetail.aspx?articleid=75&Keywords= One other thing you may want to think about trying is an acupuncturist for pets. Acupuncture is a hugely underused system of medicine and can be a lifesaver in many situations. I know you really love your dog and will exhaust every avenue you can until she is better. Good luck! 12. I am so Sorry to Hear of your Pups Problem but I give you allot of credit for standing by her OK as for the diapers I know a sure fire way to keep them on her as I do it to my Pomeranian Females when they come into season and I do not want to breed OK Buy a baby diaper that fits her then put a small hole in it to fit her tail threw then put the diaper on backwards as it will fit snugger then I will tape mine all the way around as it will be snug and it ill not fall off also I have a over diaper that is made for female so a male cannot access them and it keeps the under diaper on I so promise this works I have used this method for years and have great success If you like you can email me personally and I Will give you the address of the gal who make My over diapers as it is her little side business Good Luck To You and Your Pooch
  13. Little girls underwear (or little boys) with a tail hole cut out in the right place. Women's ULTRA thin maxi-pads (Stayfree makes an overnight one that is long). This problem really sucks. You may want to contact the nearest University Veterinary Clinic... often, they have the most up to date information since they are teaching new students.
  14. You should get a new vet. There are other medications and procedures that can help. If the vet isn't willing to work with you and help, you should get a vet that will. I can't imagine a vet telling you to put your dog to sleep merely because she leaks urine. New vet!
  15. You have options on meds for your dog. They also use DES which is a hormone based med and can be used very successfully with or in combination with the Proin. It may take some time to regulate the meds and as she ages they may have to be increased but you do have other options. Good luck.
  16. I have a 9.5 year old female lab. She was on Proin for awhile and she had break through leakage. My vet started her on DES which we get from a compounding pharmacy. She only takes 1 pill a week and it works. I'd be talking to my vet about that option or consulting another vet. Best of luck to you!
