My dog has just been spayed?
She's 3 pounds, 1 yr. old papillon. The vet staff still has her in recovery. I am most unhappy with them right now for a few reasons, so in case they do not give me the info I need, I'd like to get it from here before I go get her in a couple of hours. I need to know how to care for her and have some specific questions: 1-when can she eat? Do I need to feed her small amounts? 2-when will she be feeling better so I can give her a bath 3-should I put a dog diaper on her to prevent her from messing with her stitches or could that hurt her instead? 4-Is it a bad idea to pick her up? She loves being picked up and held. Anything else you think I need to know, please tell me.

- I dont think there was any restrictions on my dog regarding when she could eat after she was spayed... You shouldn't give her a bath until the stitches are removed or dissolved. Do not put a diaper on her - the incision needs to breath, you will be trapping moisture down there if you do. If she is trying to get at her stitches, you have to get her an E Collar. You will be able to tell if she can be picked up when you get her. If she is in pain, then let her be. You will need to restrict her activity as best you can for about 7-10 days.
- do not bathe her... the stitches cannot get wet (wait until the stitches come out or dissolve if they're that kind) ... she will eat as soon as she feels ready to... it varies from dog to dog.. don't put anything on that could snag the stitches... picking her up is fine as long as you're gentle... she'll feel better in a couple of days....
- You will need to eliminate your dogs exercise for a few days and try to keep her from jumping on and off furniture, on and off of you for that matter. Do not give her a bath, you do not want the incisions wet. Just keep a eye on them for any type of seepage. You will see the area red or a little swollen. This is common, most importantly is that its not seeping or there is a infection. You can take her stitches out in 10-14 days yourself if you ever have before or feel if you feel comfortable doing it. Normaly there is no fee when you have the vet do it.
- 1. she maybe able to eat a little tonight let her be your guide 2. I am not sure about a bath I didn't until after the stitches came out 3.I found the stitches did not bother them 4.you could pick her up carefully she will be a lot better tomorrow
- She can eat when she wants, but probably won't want to eat much for a day or two. Make sure she has plenty of fresh water available. No bath until the stitches are gone. The doggie diaper will just aggravate her and she may not mess with the stitches anyway. You can pick her up, just be gentle. She'll probably appreciate being held, but let her pick the position. You'll be surprised at how fast she gets back to her old self. Dogs are really resilient this way and in a few days, the only way you'll know she had surgery is by the incision.
- You have paid decent money for the spay, so ASK questions!! Your vet and the techs are there to help YOU and YOUR dog.
- Your girl likely won't want to eat the day of surgery. When you pick her up she'll be groggy and should be allowed to sleep. Later on you should encourage her to have a bit of water, but food would most likely only upset her stomach too much because of the affects of anesthetic. You can't let her get the sutures wet at all. The area needs to be kept dry for the 10 days until they get taken out. You can't put a diaper on her, but the vet's office should give you an E-collar. Most dogs really hate wearing it but it's important to keep it on so she can't rip out her stitches. When my dogs needed to wear one, I took it off whenever I was able to watch them - makes it easier on the dog. You can pick her up as much as you want. You can take her for short walks in a couple of days when she's feeling more like herself. You need to curtail her jumping, though, you don't want her pulling out any stitches. Some vets send home pain meds, others don't because they feel that if the dog is in a bit of pain, they won't try to over-do it and injure themselves. That's something you should discuss with your vet before you bring her home and decide which you'd prefer.
- . congratulations on getting your dog fixed depending on how she reacted to the anesthetic depends on what to do with her. put out a small amount of water and food if she doesn't want it she wont eat it. No bath until the stitches are removed and cuddles are fine but she maybe groggy and just want to sleep congratulations again
- she can eat as sonn as she comes home. Just make sure she does not eat too much. I would feed her 3/4 of what I usually feed. She will probably not mess with the stiches, but it's not a bad idea. Monitor the stitches for 7 days, then take her back to get them out. DO NOT bathe her until the stitches come out (i would even wait a few days!)
- if your vet is any good then he/she will give you that info in a leaflet,if he/she dont then just ask.
- eating is actually a very good thing after surgery, after she wakes up from anesthesia. she could be sore for up to a month, possibly two. she will probably be just fine in a couple of weeks though. don't do the dog diaper. my vet puts the tiniest bit of super glue on the very top of every surface stitch to help them have staying power. i would just leave it alone and stop her from chewing them. they'll be ready to take out in 10 days. picking her up is fine, but when you lift her off the ground just grab closer to her front legs/chest area. she'll let you know what hurts by whining if you do touch it by accident, and she'll be just fine laying in your lap and being held.
- Good for you getting your baby spayed first of all. Ok here goes, 1 when you get her home she probably wont want to eat. Give her some water, not too much or she might throw up. you can give her a small meal later on. again not too much because she will have a bit of an upset tummy. If she doesnt want to eat dont worry about it. 2. I'd give her at least a week for the stitches to heal. You dont want to give her a bath right way. It wont hurt of her not to get a bath for a couple of weeks. 3 No the the baby diaper, it wont allow the stitches to heal properly. if she does mess with her stitches then you need an e-collar. She wont like it one bit but it will keep her from messing with her stitches. 4 you can pick her up just be careful when you do it. her tummy area is going to be very tender. You don't want her jumping around and on and off furniture for a while, Dont want her to mess up her stitches. If the stitches start looking very red or you see discharge keep an eye on it, you might have to take her in because she might develop an infection. Good luck
- My dog was spayed and here is what I know 1- I know that she will be able to eat fine they may give you some meds that you slip into her food or a treat 2- I would put off the bah for a week or so any emotional damage done during this time can last a lifetime (my dog was slightly frightened by a small child was not too fond of small children after) 3- They'll give you a cone to put around her head or you can use a diaper if the dog does not seem to be fighting with either just trust her that she won't try and rip the stitches out once she tries put the cone or diaper back one 4- Wait a week before picking her up though she can be pet don't want to hurt your dog and cause emotional trauma see above Hope this could help!
- I have a little one too that was spayed in June,,,First off if you ahve not seen her yet prepare yourself,,,,so sad and pathetic and she may not be to happy with you : ( Feed little amount and leave water out for her,,,,it takes some straining of the tummy muscles to potty so be careful.,,,she probably wont eat much anyway. She will lay around the first day which is normal,,,,she probably would not want to be held but if she shows signs lay her on the bed next to you and pet her. I wouldnt cover the stitched area it needs air to heal but she may need a puppy cone to put around her neck...my baby has long legs and was able to reach her stitches however your may not even be able to just watch her. One thing for you to know which I didnt after a few days below the incision area she may get a nut size hard mass which paniced me but was told in normal so dont panic ,,,remember she is healing inside and out. Dont bath her until the stitches comeout so they dont risk being infected. If she is lethargic which they can be watch her gums if they are pink and healthy dont worry they drugs are wearing off if they are gray or off white call your vet...good luck and if you have any problems or questions email me ...I have been there too!!
- My 3yr old Lab was spayed on the 5th Oct, she could eat straight away but I was told only small amounts, but she didn't eat till the middle of the night. You should wait until the stitches have been taken out until you bath her. Don't put anything over the stitches, you need to let air circulate to help with healing. Avoid picking her up, you could cause her more discomfort. Amy was a bit unsettled the first night but the following day she was fine. You need to keep her on a lead for 10 days until her stitches come out, then a couple more to make sure, then she will be back to normal. If she does try to pick at her stitches you need to put a bucket collar on her, but the vet said only if necessary because it can distress her.
