Diapers Q&A

Disposable Diapers or Cloth Diapers or a Combination?

My wife and I are trying to have a baby and the discussion of diapers came up. With the extrordinary expense and the sheer waste of "plastic" diapers we have talked about going back to rewashable cloth diapers and using "plastic" diapers only in an emergency or if we are traveling... what do you all think?

  1. Yes, that's more like it. When you're at home, it's more practical to use rewashable cloth diapers. When you're out, that's the time you could make use of disposable diapers.
  2. I have had children spreading over a 21 year period, starting back when disposable diapers were not really available up to when they were the thing to have. In considering the expense of not using the disposable diapers, you must look at the expense of cloth diapers. Water to wash them , delicate detergent to wash them in, electricity to dry all those diapers, the time spent washing and folding them, and putting them away ... vs. the disposable diapers that come ready to use. I would use both if you really want to have the experience of the "old fashioned" diapers. It's a good idea to keep a few cloth diapers around anyway to use in an emergency.
  3. Depends. If you're planning on helping your wife to scrape the doo doo off the diapers before washing them, i'd say sounds like a brilliant plan. If not then stick to "paper" diapers. I'd say that if you go with the cloth diapers, have the wife breatfeed so there's less doo doo and you save money on formula too. Babies who are breast fed doo doo alot less.
  4. DISPOSABLE! Its 2006, give your wife a break=)
