  1. I used anything with velcro with my first one...
  2. Good for you!! I have a 4 month old- we've been using cloth almost exclusively. I can't begin to tell you how much we (yes, my husband too!) love them. They're easy, cheap (about $300 will get you to potty training age) and good on the environment Out of the several I've tried, I like the pre-folds the best. We have yet to have a massive blowout. They're also usually the cheapest. I use Thristies brand w/ pro-wrap brand covers. I would recommend about 30 or so to start w/ for a newborn and about 6/8 covers as these you can reuse if they don't get soiled. After about 14lbs, you can go to the next size, which can mean buying maybe 24 or so. I buy them from www.maineclothdiaper.com. If all goes well, they'll last for your next baby. Oh yeah- they're really easy to wash too.
  3. I love the chinese prefolds with the bummi whisper wraps. Super easy!
  4. it's a Hassle, but better off for Mother Earth!!!!
  5. well, personally, i don't like cloth diapers... cause they're diapers! i'm not gonna wash them
  6. I use cloth diapers on my 9-month-old and I've had a lot of luck with the cotton prefolds with the vinyl pull on pants (Gerber)... they're the cheapest and most available in my area (for some reason, the area I live on doesn't sell other varieties... I'd have to buy online for the other brands of cloth diapers). I've been happy with this method of cloth diapering... although, it was crazy messy before solid foods were started (breastfed poop was a nightmare to clean off and pulling down those pants after a BM was disgusting). Instead of pins I use Snappis, which are y-shaped fasteners that won't harm baby (awesome product!). I use an empty cat litter bucket for the diaper pail... half of the lid flips open and snaps back shut, and the only time you smell any odor coming from it is when you open the lid to toss in the next dirty diaper. I do a load of diapers when the pail is full (about 30 diapers)... I wash on cold first with a mild detergent and some baking powder. I then run a second wash on hot with some more detergent, but stop after a couple of minutes of agitation. I then let that soak overnight. I start the cycle back up in the morning and add about 1/2 c. white vinegar to the first rinse (to ensure all soap residue is removed and to rebalance the pH of the diapers)... the 2nd rinse removes any remaining vinegar. I dry the diapers on high w/ NO fabric softeners or dryer sheets (they'll leave a film in the fabric that in time will ruin the diapers absorbancy). I wash the diaper covers with my baby's regular laundry and line dry those, again, making sure to never use any fabric softener on them. You probably know most of this already... lol. Here's an awesome website for cloth diapering info. Check out the detergent chart... it rates all the detergents out there in regards to washing cloth diapers. http://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/detergentchoices.htm
  7. Terry Towelling Squares are the best, in my opinion. I have some AIO's and Pockets and I really do prefer to use the squares (prefolds I think americans call them - I'm australian). Buy some nice little covers (water proof ones, or use plastic pants and then put regular pants over them) and they look just as snazzy, not to mention cheaper. Plus you can use the squares as clothes. With cloths, if you can get your hands on some polar fleece liners, it makes them more absorbant...if you can't find any to buy, go to a material shop, buy say 1 metre of polar fleece material and cut it into 5cm x 10cm rectangles....and bobs your uncle! Good luck!
  8. For a quick run down, visit http://www.diapershop.com -- they've got a pretty extensive FAQ section that will help answer most of your questions. As far as exactly what to buy--no one can make that decision but you! It all depends upon what you like, what's easiest for you to use, what fits your baby, and what you can afford! There's not enough space to get into a lot of detail here, but you are welcome to email me through the Answers link and I can help you sort through your preferences & what would probably work best for you. Don't be put off by people talking about how awful it is to wash CDs--10 to 1 they've never actually done it! Washing CDs boils down to about 2 or 3 extra loads of laundry per week...And with kids in the house, that's nothing! You don't need to bleach, boil or add strange things to your wash cycle. The biggest key to getting clean diapers is avoiding build-up in your diapers. The easiest way to make sure you don't get that is to use about 1/3 of the amount of detergent that you normally would (logic says the opposite, but leftover detergent in a diaper can react with urine, making a stink), wash on hot, rinse twice. About every 3rd wash or so, add a small squirt of dishwashing liquid to your washer with the diapers & that will help kill any residue. Easy peasy!! Again, email me if you would like further information! Good luck with the new baby, and I hope CDing goes well for you!!!!
  9. Bumkins AIO's are great I LOVED them when my son was a lil baby they are quick and simple. FuzziBunz with two micro terry inserts was my night system and I stuck with it the WHOLE time I did cloth with BOTH of my kids it worked best and I NEVER ever ever had any leaks and that was important as my kids slept with me. I loved kissaluvs with a wool cover also. Try some WAHM ( work at home mom ) diapers too they are GREAT!!! Some of my favs were WAHM diapers! If you have the money organic velour fitted diapers are great and oh so soft. Organic Bamboo is wonderful too.
