Diapers Q&A

Cloth diapers?

I was wondering what you need to get started with cloth diapers. I was looking into it to save some money since I am having twins, I dont mind extra loads of wash or having to clean poop off. I am a little confused on what I would need to buy. There are the pre folds, covers, other diaper looking things. I am really at a lost. I went to different web sites and they say to buy diapers but what part is the diaper and what do I need covers with. Thanks

  1. generally a cloth diaper is an all cotton white square that gets pinned onto the baby followed by a pair of rubber or plastic pants to cover the diaper. you also need powder to keep them dry after you change. then about a billion other things to keep them happy. all of my kids wore cloth diapers. most were born before pampers cam out. good luck
  2. Oh gosh well it was years ago for me. The white diapers that you fold come in large packages like 6 or even 12 and you will need them. I liked these because you can fold them over and they can be used for many months before they grow out of them. Get the good sturdy plastic safety pins. Then you cover up the diaper with a plastic elastic panty. It is extra work, but it will save you a lot of money. Best wishes = )
  3. As a mother and grandmother, I have used both. Although the idea of using cloth diapers is environmentally correct, the truth is that you spend a lot of time soaking, washing, drying, folding and changing cloth diapers. Add to that, you will have to use plastic pants on top of the cloth diapers, and cloth diapers need diaper pins, too. Today's disposable diapers are by far superior to cloth diapers. The absorbency of a disposable diaper far surpasses that of a cloth diaper. I know, they go to a landfill, but think of all the energy that is being used (heated water, detergent, fabric softener, drying) for cloth diapers, and to me, it is a trade off. Since you are expecting twins, you will be looking for time saving, superior products to take care of the everyday chores so you can have more time to enjoy your babies. If you want to try cloth diapers, try a diaper service for a couple of months, that way you have not invested in the cost of cloth diapers. If you prefer cloth, then you can purchase cloth. (They aren't cheap!)
  4. Cloth diapers aren't what they used to be! Check out the links below for a much more modern take on cloth.
  5. I used regular pre-folds for all 3 of my girls. The first one had diaper pins and rubber pants, then with the next 2 I discovered diaper wraps - pure heaven! I bought the Gerber diapers but didn't like them much, then found the classic Chinese diapers which are wonderful. You may pay a bit more for the Chinese ones but they are far superior to the chain store pre folds. If you can find unfolded, its nice to have a couple dozen of them, they make great extra liners. My oldest is 20 now and I still have several dozen diapers that now make great rags. The link below also has good info. http://www.diaperaps.com
  6. i agree with Granola........cloth diapering is much different these days though there are moms out there at that do prefer a prefold and a snappi (no pins....that is way outdated) i like fitted hemp/cotton blend you will need cover will all diapers except an All In One or AIO i use Crickett's and Growing Greens the hemp is fricken awesome!!....so absorbant.....antimicrobial..naturally organic....and holds up years more than cotton here are the links to the diapers i use....but there are many others out there but you must buy quality.....don't go cheap on diapers....you are having twins so you may need to spend about $500 to get started......but that is NO comparison when talking thousands of $$$$ on sposies and wipes i even cloth wipe......i ordered one yard of hemp/cotton blend fleece from ebay and made my own breast pads and wipes and then i keep a bowl of water on the changing table to clean my baby's bottom......and wipes get thrown right in the wash with the diapers and others are wrong here......you don't need to presoak or dunk or anything like that.......i just put dirty dipes in a laundry basket and wash them.....that simple..........i have been cloth diapering for 3 months and sooooooo regret not having informed myself better with my first girl with whom we used sposies....it is such a relief to know i ALWAYS have diapers on hand and when we go shopping i never to have to buy use some vinegar in the wash good luck!
