Diapers Q&A

How do cloth diapers and the covers work?

The baby wears a cloth diaper, then you put the cover over it. So every time you wash the cloth diaper, are you a washing the cover as well? So is it every cover for every cloth diaper? And you have to wash the cover as much as the cloth diaper? Thanks!

  1. I don't know, as I used disposables, but my sister used cloth diapers for her oldest son, but she had a diaper service that came and washed them all for her. I would use rubber pants over top of the cloth diaper, then only wash the rubber pants when they were soiled.
  2. Depending on the material of the cover, you really only need 3-8. You should wash them when you normally do diapers, but in between you can just alternate them to let them air out during diaper changes as long as they don't have poo on them.
  3. The second answer is exactly right, but I want to add that you can also purchase all-in-one diapers (diaper and cover in one). That way you can choose to change the whole thing and wash it every time it's used. Pockets work the same way, you just have to stuff and unstuff the diaper with the absorbent part. I use mostly prefolds with a Snappi and a Bummis SWW or Prorap, and I try to wash about half of the covers every time I wash. The ones that are worn overnight need to be washed after one or two night. It's great that you're thinking about cloth! I would never go back to stinky, leaky disposables!
  4. I used a diaper service that would wash the diapers for me and then drop me off clean ones once a week, but i did have to wash the waterproof pants. I had three pairs and would usually hand wash them if they were just a little damp or if they got poppy toss them in the washer, I would use usually two covers and have one fresh one for the next day. Rock-a-dry-baby should have a web site, may only be in alberta.
