- if you have your own washer and dryer... thats a big help in how many you need... i would have at least 20 per child... and you fold it from a square to a triangle... and tie all three ends together around the baby.. you have to change them more often then a disposible but and takes more time to deal with but you save a good chunk of coins that way
- Cloth diapers are a good money saver but can take up more time. If this will your first time dealng with the poo. I would recommend to go with 20-30. Not to many but just enough, just in case you want to discard. A washer and dryer is a must have. and its good to keep cleaner near your toilet for those rinse outs in the toilet bowl. You never wanted to just throw them in the wash. Pre wash in the toilet for poo! I comment you for even trying though. Good luck!
- Cloth nappies can be bought in department stores. I am a grandmother and would hate to have to go back to cloth nappies which have to washed several times and also rinsed thoroughly to get rid of soap which will chaffe baby if not done correctly, then a softner has to be added to the rinse. Even after that baby can still chaffe from cloth nappies more so than disposables. Also cloths leak through to babies clothes making baby uncomfortable especially if on an outing unless a pair of pilchers are worn over top of nappy. pilchers can also chaffe babies legs. So my opinion is disposables are more comfortable and cleaner for baby. Of course they are bad for the enviroment, but I would hate to go back to the bad old days of cloth nappies. PHEW! If you decide on the cloths buy at least 40 as you will be forever washing them.
- How about an answer from someone who actually knows what they are talking about?-) First off; Do you want cheap, or easy? If you want to go cheap, order 2 or 3 dozen Chinese prefolds in infant size. Get 6 small covers and 6 mediums. Bummi's Super Whisper Wraps are the best. You Need a good diapers pail and a waterproof liner or 2 for it. Then you just throw the diapers in and empty it into the washer when its full. Wash on hot with a couple tablespoons of unscented detergent and some vinegar or bac-out in the rinse (instead of fabric softener, which is bad for diapers) and you're good to go. A newborn needs about 12 diapers a day and the covers can be reused without washing until they get poo on them, or get stinky. If money is less of a concern, you can go with "all-in-ones" which go on just like a paper diaper and are a diaper and cover together (good for skittish dads, grandparents and daycare workers.) DO NOT buy the "Gerber" or other prefolds from a department or discount store, they have polyester in the middle and are a total, non-absorbent, waste of money. Likewise, plastic pants are a thing of the past. PUL, wool and polarfleece are your best bets for covers. Pins are obsolete, I just stuck the diaper in the cover (folded lengthwise and over in front for a boy and fold in thirds width-wise for a girl) and Velcro the cover closed. There is a cool product called "snappis" for a more snug fit, but I found them a hassle.
