Diapers Q&A

My 16 year old dog pees and defacates in house, how do I retrain him?

My dog is very old (16) and arthritic, some people say I should consider dog diapers, others say take him to vet and let him go.....I'm forever cleaning and smelling this old poor dear is driving me NUTS!! I have a huge yard he won't use unless led and made to use.

  1. Ask a trainer at the local pet store.
  2. Take him to the vet first. At that age there may be a medical reason for it.
  3. The dog cannot be retrained...he is on his way out. I'm sorry to tell you. Dogs get senile just as humans do. They may not be able to hold it, or they may not remember that they are supposed to go outside. Sorry
  4. Time for the dirt nap. I'm facing the same issue here with my aging doggy. It's a hard thing to think about.
  5. I worked at PetsMart and they sell these pads used to train puppies to use litter boxes. They are scented and they somehow make the dog want to use it. I dont know how it works, but they sold like mad when I worked there. I would def try them cuz they could work for your dog, and I don think they cost much either. Good Luck. - Travis -
  6. At pets mart there are pee pads, simply place the pads where the dog pees. It will eventually learn to use those places only...or get a baby gate and places in in the doorway of the room you would rather clean and place newspaper in there clean it after he uses it...then clean the other pee spots up with hot water vinegar and amonia,so that he won't use those spots again...my dog is old and messy like that too...
  7. ITS USELESS TO TRY TO RETRAIN HIM AT THIS POINT.I WOULD SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION FIRST TO MAKE SURE THERE ISN'T AN INFECTION.HOWEVER IF HE ISN'T NEUTERD THATS ONE OF YOUR PROBLEMS.ON THE OTHER HAND YOUR BEST BET IS TO GO WITH THE DIAPERS.IF YOU LOVE HIM AS MUCH AS HE LOVES YOU IT SHOULDN'T BE TO MUCH OF A BOTHER
  8. here are good OLD dog sites. I hope they help....http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/DummiesArticle/id-1927,subcat-PETS.html http://www.vetinfo4dogs.com/dincont.html http://www.ehow.com/tips_2449.html...Your vet could give you medication to relieve much of the pain from arthritis. You can also try the joint health supplements, available at your pet supply. They very often help.
  9. Time for vet, maybe something is wrong or just being too old.
  10. Your dog is 16 (which is old for a dog) and has arthritis. There is probably a link between its age and the arthritis and the urination/defication in the house. Take him/her to the vet and get a complete checkup. There are several arthritis drugs that your dog can take, and there are always doggie diapers (man I wish I had had those when my Deutchess started with her weak bladder).
  11. poor old doggie. he is probably senile, please don't shout at him or punish him, he doesn't mean to do it. and don't put him down either. if it was you what would you want other people to do? i mean you have him for 16 years and he is so old, you have to put up with it and love him. diapers sound good.
  12. Get some stuff to neutralize the smell.Spray it where she peed and she won't know where he peed.If he starts whining take him out.I wake up at 6:00am to walk my dog.
  13. Unfortunately, your loved pet is getting old and time is running out. It will be hard for you but I suggest you put it to sleep. Your dog is probably in severe pain with the arthritis and its system is shutting down and the dog can't control its body functions. It will hurt you but it will be the best and humane thing to do.
