Diapers Q&A

A friends dog is in heat and making a mess all over because of it. What can she do to stop it?

The dog is a female labrador who resides indoors. She makes a mess all over. Persons tried using diapers on the dog, but she kept chewing them off. Didn't seem like a proper thing to do to the dog in the first place. I told her to get the dog fixed, but her and her husband don't want to use that option just yet. Dog is about a year old.

  1. Either purchase doggy diapers from the petstore or get the dog fixed if they do not plan on breeding her - I think these are really your only 2 options!
  2. confine the dog to only a cetain area of the house or get the dog fixed.
  3. There is no way to stop a dog from going into heat. HAVE HER SPAYED!!!!!! It will make her healthier and happier. There are already too many dogs in this world, prevent any more litters!
  4. If they don't want the mess all over the house then they need to confine her to 1 area until it is over , I highly recommend having it fixed but they must let the cycle run it's course first , a vet will not fix her while she is in heat . Having her fixed is better for her in the long run with health and happiness
  5. At the pet store they sell a product for this problem. They are called bitch's britches. They are doggy diapers to keep the mess from getting everywhere. It may be cheaper to buy adult diapers and cut a hole in them for the tail. Try putting a pair of underwear or shorts over them so she can't chew them off. If that don't work then the only option is to put her in a cage or keep her confined for that week.
  6. They do make doggie pads. You buy them little panties and they have menstruation pads for dogs that help with the odor as well as the mess. Otherwise keep her outside until her heat is over- away from other dogs also!
  7. If she is not going to be bred for puppies, she should be spayed. The long-term cost of carpet cleaning and possible puppy care far outweigh the cost of spaying the dog now. Call around to many vets and get the details and costs -- They may all be the same, but it is a good idea. I've recently called 6 animal hospitals in MN and gotten ranges of $160.00 - $500.00 for the same dog. You can find a reasonable price this way. It is more dangerous to spay during a dog's 'heat', but many vets will do it for an extra fee (25-50 more) It is the best bet for your friend if this is an inside pet she cares about. Really -- ask your friend 1. Do they intend to keep this dog as their pet 2. Do they really want her to have 5-10 puppies by some neighborhood dog? Talk about a mess all over!
  8. Why don't they want her to get fixed? A dog in heat is miserable. If they want her to breed, they should find a sire and get on with it. It they don't want her to breed, they should get her fixed! It's not that expensive.
  9. tell your friend to get the dog fixed. she should go to her local animal shelter. ask just how many dogs are received each day, then ask how many are put to sleep????? i'm sure she would love to have just one litter!!!! sell the dogs and make a few bucks. she will never know the long term well being, of that litter she sold. millions and millions of animals are put to sleep by the hour.
  10. Get the dog fixed. She will continue to go into heat and cause misery for all.
  11. she might be starting to be pregnant the youngest dog i know that was pregnant she was one year old
  12. Get the dog fixed.
  13. doggie diapers in combination with one of those heat cones
