Baby hasn't had a bowel movement in 60 hrs !!??
My baby is 3 1/2 weeks old and is exclusively breast-fed. Is it normal for her to not have a bowel movement in almost 2 1/2 days ?? I am just worried if this is normal for a baby this small. She seems to be eating normally and has 6 to 8 wet diapers daily.

- Ask your Dr. If milk is going in it needs to be coming out.
- Call your pediatrician. A baby of that age should be having 2-3 dirty diapers a day. She may have a blockage problem, the doctor will be able to access that better then those of us on line.
- Well, you might want to call the doc. I would not worry until tomorrow. If still no bowl movement then call. It can be normal depending on the baby.
- try a glycerin suppository or lay them on there back lift there legs for pressure, or a warm bath might work this is what we did for ours (4) kids two were preemie( 3 mo. early )good luck
- I used to give my daughters dark karo syrup in their bottles to help them go it is delicate for their little tummys (about a teaspoon- a tablespoon) and another thing is Iron-- I know it is good for baby to get Iron and Dr. 's push it but it causes extreme constipation have you been eating a lot of iron? If your baby starts spikeing fevers and crying a lot I would asume you need to get help, that is a sign of constipation or being impacted.
- call the doctor
- don't worry same thing happened to my 2 1/2 month baby, the doctor said its normal they can have several bowl movements in a day and can also go few days without passing stool. he said to give glycerin suppository on the 4th day and if the stool is not hard then its ok and u don't have to worry but if its hard u'll need to contact your doctor to give u some medicine. good luck and hope this helps
- Yes, for exclusively breast-fed babies. Good for you for breast feeding. Seems that so many people are into feeding their babies forumula, jar baby-food, baby-cereal... and all sorts of crazy things I've seen people giving their baby, from sausages to candy... Our daughter was exclusively breast-fed for 8 months or so. Basically all she did was pee a lot and perhaps a poo once in awhile. Then, after 8 months, oshe'd have some steamed root vegetables. She was breastfeeding all the time for about the first... 1.5 years, and still a couple time a day now at 2.5 years... more of a motherly bonding thing I guess, but she says that it tastes good, ha ha. Slowly she ate more and more steamed garden vegtetables, and less breast feeding. Anyway, the more breast milk and the longer the better. Your baby will be stronger and smarter for it. We can see it at the playground everyday -- the bottle fed (I call it junk food) babies are... far behind. They tend to look stoned and spaced out, and are just... slow.
- because breastmilk is so well designed for your baby it absorbs almost everything it takes in and sometimes this creates little waste. when my babe was 4 weeks old she went through a phase where she didn't poo for a week. i was calling the pediatrician after 5 days of no poo. they kept telling me it was normal. they advised me to try giving her water with karo in the hopes that more fluid would help move things along. they also advised rectal stimulation. (which was painful for her i think.) but it finally worked after 7 days. the bottom line is that it isn't that unusual for a breastfed baby to go a week without a bowel movement. as long as they do not seem to be in discomfort and they are passing gas. you can always ring your pediatrician for peace of mind. oh.. and look out once she unloads. good lord... what a mess.
- If the baby is having enough wet diapers which it sounds like it then I was told anything over 10 days is constipation for a breast fed baby, so dont worry it hasnt even been three days. You still have seven to go before its considered constipation. relax mom.
- My doctor always told us that babies can go up to 7 days with out pooping. However I disagreed, and we would give our kids 1/2 of the liquid glycerin suppositories. And sure enough they would be pooping hard little balls. I would get ah old of your doctor.
