- You should consult with a vet about this or someone that is an expert with animals.
- at that age you should really talk to your vet about different medications. while clomicalm can be used, it is generally avoided in old dogs as it can induce seizures. a really good medication that is used specifically in older dogs is anipryl. it is used to treat doggy alzheimer's. how long has the anxiety been going on?
- I wish I had a decent answer for you. When I had that issue I found a roommate (let a friend move in with me) whose rent was "paid" by watching my beloved old dog while I worked. It was the best solution I could come up with since she did not react well to drugs.
- I think the Clomacalm (sp?) will help - I hope so! - and there are other things that people do to help their dog with separation anxiety. Melatonin (check for dosage....) and a plug-in diffuser with D.A.P. will also help. I am not sure if it's OK to give Melatonin along with Clomacalm - ask your vet. Here's a link for DAP - http://vetmedicine.about.com/cs/behavior/a/dogbehaviorprob.htm Also, a link for things you can do to get her to be more calm. http://www.greytdogs.com/anxiety.html Good luck!
- Wow! I am soooo impressed that you have a 17 year old minpin! Good for you-you have obviously taken great care of your dog! It almost sounds like she is frightened to be without you because of the lack of sight and hearing. Are there noises around your home that might spook her? Like the refrigerator going on and off? Do you drape a blanket over part of the crate so she can't see shadows around? Does she have good enough teeth for a little rawhide chew while you are at work? How about some relaxing music playing while you are away? There are some very mild calming drops available at holistic pet stores that may work to take the edge off your dog. I use them every once in awhile on my Blue Heeler when I am not home. Also, is there the possibility of a neighbor or family member staying with the dog or checking on her while you are gone? Possibly your vet could help with some suggestions as well. Good luck-aren't minpins great?
