How To Wash Cloth Diapers Questions
Washing cloth diapers for the first time- anything special I need to do? And then thereafter? I bought special detergent (7th generation) w/o additives because I heard that is best for the diapers. How should I wash them the first time to prepare them to be used? I heard I should wash them to maximize their ability to absorb. And how should I wash them each time they are soiled? ANything different or always the same way? Thanks so much! I am using all in one cloth diapers, by the way.
How do you wash cloth diapers if you live in an apartment? I want to go back to use cloth diapers on my daughter but we live in an apartment. It was headaches going back and forth to laundermat doing washes with cloth diapers. Any tips making it easier? I used to do cloth diapers with my daughter for few months but it was lots of work. We wanted to go to laundermat only once every 2 weeks. Don't want to go twice a week for doing cloth diapers laundry. I have heard that wonder wash is not reliable because not getting the dirt out enough. And, diaper service is about 3 hours away from me. Not an option for me. Maybe I should try wonder wash and see.
What is the best way to wash cloth diaper covers? I am using prefolds/covers for my 8 week old son. I am wondering on the best way to wash the covers. I wash the prefolds on the hot cycle on my front loader, but i am curious if the extra hot water might not be good for the covers. Any thoughts?
Cloth diapers and HE washing machine? So we just got a new washer, since our old one died. We got one of the new HE front loaders, but after watching it wash, we're concerned about using it for our diapers (BumGenius Pocket version 2.0). There's not much water in the machine, and we're not at all familiar with the new HE detergents. Any hints on how to wash cloth diapers in this type of machine without having them either gunk up with detergent or else not get clean? Any preferred detergent?
Bum Genius cloth diapers- How to use the snap insert? How to wash 1st time? I just got my bumgenious cloth diapers in the mail. THey came with two inserts. One has snaps and one does not. I can't figure out how to use them. I don't see any snaps on the diapers? How do I use them? How do I wash them the first time and should I wash them more than once before use? Thanks! Is there a certain type of detergent I should use for the cloth diapers?
How should I wash my cloth diapers? I moved into a new house and my only option for washing laundry is cold. I have always done my cloth diapers on a cold/cold wash, then a hot/cold wash with an extra rinse. Bleach once a month, as recommended. But, now, without that hot cylce, diapers are starting to smell strongly of ammonia after they get wet with urine and baby stools. My idea of washing them now, has to change. Do you think I should be doing a cycle at the laundromat like every other week, so I can get a hot/cold wash? Or what other suggestions might you have? Please...only serious responses from people with experience. Thank you. I have to do this for as long as my daughter is in diapers! We moved overseas, but have a US spec washer...and the house we live in only has cold water hook-ups! I would have to have a European washing machine in order to get the hot cycle (because their washing machines heat the water inside the washer, requiring less energy).
How do cloth diapers and the covers work? The baby wears a cloth diaper, then you put the cover over it. So every time you wash the cloth diaper, are you a washing the cover as well? So is it every cover for every cloth diaper? And you have to wash the cover as much as the cloth diaper? Thanks!
What diaper pail do you use for cloth diapers? I have been cloth diapering exclusively for 8 months. I use a blue and white Cosco diaper pail with a cloth liner inside. This worked great when his diapers were smaller, but now the pail fills up long before I'm ready to wash diapers. I know many families use a 13 gallon garbage can, but will this keep in odor? What diaper pails do you use? I'm concerned that diaper pails intended for paper diapers will have too small an opening for my diapers. Also, I do not want to have to use any type of disposable liner or bag for the diaper pail.
Are cloth diapers really environmentally sound and do you use them...? Well, I was thinking since you have to always wash them are they really enivornmentally sound? Also, IF you use cloth diapers how do you go about getting them ready for the wash? At first I wanted to use cloth diapers, but I'm living in a small Condo Complex which only has one washer and one dryer for use. Do you think it is discourteous to wash cloth diapers at my complex?? Thank you!
should i still use cloth diapers? I bought fuzzi bunz cloth diapers about 2 months ago and switched from disposable. We just got our electric bill and it has gone up 100.00 in one month! The only thing I can think of is that the bill went up b/c i'm washing cloth diapers in hot water, can they be washed in warm water or should I just get rid of the darn things.
Has anyone used a wonder wash (portable mini manual washer) for cloth diapers? It's only $42 it seems like it makes cloth diapering make more sense since it doesn't use as much water and gets clothes cleaner faster (with no electricity). I am planning on cloth diapering but was worried about wasted water and all the energy going into washing them with a million cycles. What is your opinion? http://www.laundry-alternative.com/catalog/Washing-5-1.html
hand washing cloth diapers? How do you hand wash cloth diapers effectively. We don't have a washer and dryer so we use the one at our apartment complex and it gets expensive quickly using the coin machines. And being that I'm a stay at home mom I'd like to wash them by hand as they need to be washed or a few at a time.
Washing cloth diapers? I am new to cloth diapering and have just started to wash my diapers. Here is how I've been washing them: Cold wash with 1/3 cup baking soda Hot wash/Cold rinse with 1/3 cup baking soda and All free and clear w/ half of recommended detergent Cold rinse w/ downy ball half full of vinegar Cold rinse again to remove vinegar smell. How many times do I wash them this way? Is it ever ok to just wash them on hotwash/cold rinse with half of detergent and vinegar? Is it common for cloth diapers to create lint balls when you first start washing them and does this ever stop? Also how do you know when you need to strip your diapers? Like I said I'm totally new to cloth diapers and want to make sure I wash them right so I get the maximum absorbancy and softness.
Help with washing cloth diapers? How do you wash your cloth diapers, especially if you use more than one kind. I am so confused. I have bum genius 3.0 one size diapers and a happy heiny, and an getting some prefolds with covers as well. The two pocket diapers came today, but have conflicting washing instructions. One says to use a natural soap or an "all free" detergent, and the other says specifically not to use a natural soap or all free detergent, just to use regular tide?? Any help?? here is what the bum genius site said: What detergent can I use? You should only use detergents that are free of dyes, enzymes, perfumes, whiteners and brighteners. Using detergents containing these ingredients will cause damage to your diaper including elastic failure and leaking. Then happy Heinies says this: ecommended detergents: We recommend Tide, Sunlight, Cheer, Era, and Clout (Costco brand). These are not made with any of the natural oily substances which leave residue on fleece. Detergents to avoid: Natural soaps often contain various oils. These should NOT be used because they will leave a residue on fleece, causing it to repel liquids. The following detergents will cause a soap build up. Do NOT use them. * Dr. Bronner’s Soap * 7th Generation * Bio-Kleen * Ivory Snow * Dreft * Any ALL free detergents. * Sport-Wash and Sensi-Clean – These have the potential for detergent burn in babies
what carbon footprint is saved when you use cloth instead of throw-away diapers? can you quote the actual energy savings by using cloth diapers instead of using disposables? what scientist(s) has analyzed this to determine the benefit to the planet? if you can't quote a scientific consensus, please tell me why one should use cloth, not disposable, diapers and why. considering that you'd have to carry dirty diapers with you to get back to your house after an outing with the kids, what would you do? also consider who shall wash cloth diapers, how they are washed (hot water) and your TIME to wash diapers if not using a service (where are they now?). will you still use cloth opposed to disposables? why would you change back to cloth diapers? why would you use disposable diapers instead of cloth diapers? tell me the negative and positive impacts on your life as well as that of our Mother Earth, please. should parents be required to buy extra carbon credits because they use disposable, not cloth diapers? why?
I use cloth diapers for my daughter and they keep coming out of the wash smelling musky. What do I do? Here is a little more information: My routine consists of: Rinsing off heavily soiled diapers and soaking with baking soda in a pail that is filled half way up with warm water. They soak over night or during the day and then are brought down to be washed. We then put the whole bucket in the water and drain out the water. We put it in a prewash with spray and wash and Chlorox 2 (color safe bleach). This gets all the stains out. Works very well. Then we wash the diapers with one cup of purex and let it go through a full wash. Then we wash them a second time with half a cup of soap. Then one last time with no soap. Finally we dry the diaper on a low heat setting until it is dry. Now my friend suggested tide which did nothing and someone else suggested hang drying outside but I don't have room for a line. I don't mind washing the diapers a few times to get out the stink but this is getting ridiculous. I called the manufacturer and they said what I am doing should work. I use Kushies and swaddlebees. They are the all in ones with three layers. The kushies have an extra built in layer and a vinyl cover and the swaddlebees have liners that are inserted in a pocket at the top. Also I am currently using them on a 23 month old if that helps. They say that the poop and pee of older children are alot worse then infants. I am having another baby in September and would really like to figure this out so that I don't have to pass on stinky diapers to her. Thats just gross Oh by the way these are not the kind that need pins. The cover is built in so I can't but bleach on them and you can't dry on high heat. However I did dry them on high heat once and lost the whole load. They melted together. The bleech eats away at the outter layer as well and puts holes in the material. So no bleech and no high heat.
cloth diapers?? Does anyone know what the best detergent is to wash cloth diapers in? Also does anyone have any they would like to sell? the fitted or AIO type only.. I know you are not supposed to use Dreft and also no bleach it effects the absorbancy.. I am not against disposables, I just am trying something new..I found fitted cloth and they look just the same as the others, I also had lots of diaper rash with the first and i want to trade between the cloth while we are at home and disposables when we go out..
Cloth Diapers, that come with disposable inserts, at a reasonable price? I'm instered in attemping at saving some money and being a bit friendlier to the enviroment with diapering my child. I've been looking into the cloth diapers like the Kushies "all in one diapers" but insted of needing to constanly wash this all the time I wondered if anyone knew of an insert that's a disposible type pad and that actually worked pretty well, and didn't cost too much. (I'm pretty sure they excist somewhere!) I like the idea of cloth, I just not exactly into the idea of washing poopy diapers. (a little no problemo, just not a lotta's!)
Do you recommend disposable or cloth diapers? I'm going to have a baby girl in about three months, and I had never really thought about what kind of diaper to use...I mean, a diaper is a diaper, right? Well, apparently not. I'm finding that there is this whole alternative to disposible diapers....there are even cloth diapers without pins..and I can't really decide which way to go. I want to do what is best for my little angel, and so, what do you think? Does it really save mon ey, and what about diaper rash and the cost (and trouble) of washing cloth diapers? Cloth or not to cloth, and why? Thanks so much!
Cloth Diapers - Washing? I really want to cloth diaper my baby when he comes (end of January/beginning of February). The sites I have been to that sell them all talk about running them through a cold rinse cycle and then washing them in hot water and then running them through a rinse cycle again. Is this necessary or can you just wash them? The reason I ask is because we live in an apartment and have to pay $1.50 to wash and $1.50 to dry. I'd really rather not spend $4.50 every other day just on washing alone, especially since we can't hang dry them. Is there any other way to do it so I don't have to do more than one wash cycle? rinsing in the toilet maybe? Its my first baby so I'm new to it all. Please let me know if you have ideas or what worked for you if you've done it. Thanks
Need recommendations on cloth diapers - which brand is best? I currently use pampers but I would like to switch to cloth diapers. I have no time to deal with a diaper service nor the old fashion cloth diapers that my grandmother probably used. I have seen lots of websites with cloth diapers that promise easy use and leak free, but would like to see what other parents recommend. I need a cloth diaper that is as quick as a Pampers diaper and easy to wash. Thanks!
How do you effectively clean cloth diapers at home? I'm researching on whether cloth or disposable diapers are more cost efficient. For now I figure I will use the cloth diapers at home, and the disposable diapers when we're out, to keep from having 2 transport used diapers. My only question insofar with the cloth diaper is how to effectively clean it at home. Common sense tells me that soaking the diaper before throwing it in the wash is probably a good idea, but are there any special types of solvent I will be needing, or a special type of pail (w/ a lid) to keep odors at bay? I know u are supposed to swish the diaper in the toilet first, but are there any cleansers that are especially effective, and any that I should stay away from (harmful to baby)?
How do I get started using cloth diapers? I am considering cloth diapers but know nothing about using them. How many diapers will I need to start with for a newborn? What other accessory items will I need to start with? What is the initial cost? Is a diaper service necessary or is washing them yourself simple enough? Is there a brand or style of diaper you have had luck with? Any tips at all will be very much appreciated!
Cloth Diapers and washing...? I was reading through the care for my cloth diapers that I purchased and read that I shouldn't wash them in Dreft due to the fabric softener already in the detergent. What detergent should I use? Does it matter? Thanks!
Cloth Diapering with no washing machine? I want to begin cloth diapering to save both money and the environment but I just can't decide whether its going to be possible. (Or even be moe expensive). I don't have my own washing machinne and the launderette near us is so expensive. Is it possible to hand wash the diapers? Is this going to be a huge amount of work? Has anyone done it or is currenlty doing it?
Cloth diapers? What are the different parts to it? I am expecting a little one soon and am trying to make up my mind about cloth diapers .vs. disposable diapers.I am not getting enough info about how the cloth diapers work. I cannot afford a diaper service and will have to do the washing myself. Are there any liners etc thatI need to buy with the cloth diapers? How does the system work?
For those of you who use cloth diapers...? How do you prepare your cloth diapers for washing, wash your diapers, pretreat, what products do you use? Just want to know if anyone else out there has something better figured out than what I do, and I'm sure someone definately does!!! Also, how many diapers and covers and liners do you have for your convenience? I use both AIOs and fitted diapers with covers. Okay, so even though I did not ask, you will still suggest I use disposables. I have a six month old daughter and started using cloth diapers a few weeks ago because I'm sick of the disposables! I know how they work, I'm not stupid. And I'm not lazy either, that's a reason why I stopped using them! I did not ask you what you think I should do, this is a question for mothers that use cloth diapers!!!! ARGGGHH!!!!
Cloth diapers- fuzzi bunz, g diapers, etc. Which do you use? How many should you buy at one time? Ok. I have decided to switch over to either a cloth diaper like fuzzi bunz OR something like gdiapers, which have the biodegradeable insert that can be flushed down the toilet. Being in the south, we have water issues so, I am not sure which one would be best because I'd have to wash the cloth diapers 2x according to the websites. Anyways, which do you like/use? And how many should I buy to start out?
For those who know a thing or two about cloth diapers...? I'm debating whether or not cloth diapers will be worth it, so i have a few questions: 1. What's worse, using ridiculous amounts of water for washing (using energy and water in a desert climate) or filling up the landfills with more plastic that takes 500 years to decompose? 2. We are currently apartment hunting, and if we don't find a place with it's own washer/dryer, do you think it's gross to wash the cloth diapers in the public washers? 3. Will the cost of washing ($1.00/load) still make cloth diapers cost effective compared to disposables? THANKS!!!!!
I know this is probably a "DUH..." question.... but with cloth diapers...? Do you really have to wash and change them EVERY time they pee? It just seems crazy to me that each time they wet one you have to start over and now have another one to wash. I don't have time to wash diapers all day, but the cloth diaper thing is interesting to me. I understand that you would have to do so with poop, thats different...at least in my mind. Any ideas, hints or tips on care of the diapers and diapering with cloth in general???
Cloth diapers: do I want flushable inserts? How well do they wash in front-loaders? I'm about to buy a handful of cloth all-in-ones... Do I want flushable inserts? (Baby is a bit over four months, and breastfed; there is no "shake solids off into toilet," here -- poop = runny sludge, not solids...) And, how well do they wash in front-loaders, any experience there? Do I want to hit Costco for another jumbo box of Oxi-Clean or anything like that? liv t: I can't say anything good or bad about them yet, but check out the all-in-ones at http://clothdiaper.com/ -- not covered in that icky 100% poly fleece, which I thought was a plus, and cheap...
Gerber Flat Fold Birdseye Cloth Diapers or Heavyweight Gauze Cloth Diapers? If you are familiar with cloth diaper, can you please tell me which one is better, softer, thinner, easily dry after washed? I found these two kind being sold at Walmart. I'm thinking of getting either the Gerber Flat Fold Birdseye Cloth Diapers or Heavyweight Gauze Cloth Diapers. The Gauze one is more expensive than the birdeye diapers. Does that mean the gauze has better quality? What other department stores sell them or online stores? Is there other kind of cloth diapers which you highly recommend? Thanks in advance for your advices.
Cloth diaper users: how do I get the poop smell out of my diapers? I have two FuzziBunz AIO that seem to smell like poop still. Right now the way I was my diapers is I dump any loose feces in the toilet, keep my diapers in a dry bucket and I do laundry every night or every other night at the longest. I keep baking powder in my bucket. I do a cold rinse then a hot wash where I add 1/2 cup baking soda then another cold rinse where I add 1/3 cup white vinegar then a final cold rinse. I then dry them on high heat for 60-90 minutes. What should I being doing differently? I don't seem to have the same problem with my pre-folds or my bum genius diapers. Thanks! I forgot to mention that along with the baking soda I also put in detergent in the hot wash cycle
Whats your experience with Cloth Diapers? Which is best? ? My husband and I are trying to start a family. I want to start preparing now and finding out the facts before we have a child. We are interested in using cloth diapers. I am staying at home so washing wont be an issue. We want to try to save money and help the environment. So if you have used cloth diapers I would like to know about your experience and which cloth diapers you prefer and why??? Also if you have any other money saving suggestions that would be great.
What did you do about the leg elastic on cloth diapers coming loose? I have bum genius diapers. The leg elastic is loose on 2 of the diapers. I have owned these a month and a half and followed all washing and care directions. I am going to call the company today to inquire about free replacement, but I was just wondering if anyone here has gone through this and what would be suggested.
Weird question about cloth diapers? I use cloth on my son. I have had something weird happening lately. He eats baby food now (mainly bananas and applesauce). Whenever he poos the moisture around the poo turns a funny pinkish, rusty color. At first I thought oh my goodness he is bleeding. It doesn't happen every poo, but most of the time. He isn't acting funny or weird or more fussy than normal. Here is my question: Is it possible that there is a weird chemical reaction between the ph in his poo and the detergents that I use to wash his diapers? And yes I am going to the pediatrician about it...just wanted to know if other mothers who use cloth have had similar experiences. Oh, and it NEVER happens when I have used disposables.
im thinking of using reusible deapers (cloth diapers) do you use them and how is that going? i just think they would be more sensible but im concerned about rashes and how do you go about washing them? im used to doing a lot of wash i have four boys and this will be my first girl :) i was thinking about using the cloth at home and the disposible when out of the house and from what i have read they are really not that much trouble thank you for all your answers :)
How do you use a cloth diaper? My aunt bought me some cloth diapers for my son, and I have no clue how to use them, or put them on...or anything lol! 10 points to whoever can help me out with this! Also do you wash them just like normal clothes? Serious answers only. Thanks in advance all! They are rectangular.
Are cloth diapers cheaper than disposable diapers? The cloth diaper service in my area offers 54 cloth diapers for 19.00 flat rate and 3 dollars more for every extra dozen. Is it worth it? I won't have to wash any of them as they wash and drop off once a week.
Are cloth diapers worth it with a washing service? I'm looking into it, and there's a place that will pick up the diapers and bring new ones weekly. It runs about $67 a month for up to 80 diapers a week (this is the newborn phase, the price decreases as they use less). They provide the diapers, so I wouldn't have to buy them, the covers are optional but I see you can buy them anywhere. So with all that taken care of is it still a pain? Has anyone done this before? What do you do with the dirty diapers when you travel?
How do you like ur bum genius diapers? How many did you buy? did you need to buy inserts? How do you like them compared to other types of cloth diapers? When I bought prefolds for my first baby I bought 4 doz to get me through 3- 4 days. I'm assuming I will need about that many so I'm not washing daily. How many did you buy? Just wondering because they're a little pricey. Also, do they really fit good from newborn to toddler? Thanks!
Do your cloth diapers come out sparkling white???? My mom and I have an on-going discussion about the whiteness of cloth diapers. She says she would refuse to use them unless they are absolutely pristine, sparkling white. I say so long as you are washing them and taking steps to do it correctly, (ie, soaking them in a diaper pail before washing, using both hot AND cold water to wash them, sunning them, etc.) that they don't have to be perfectly white. This is my first baby, so I don't really have much experience with cloth, but I'm willing to try!!
What is the procedure for using cloth diapers? I am trying to determine if this would be beneficial for me, i have looked thru some of the resolved questions but they seem a bit one sided and im not excatly sure the procedure. the questions i have are basically about storage (for at home and for outings) , frequency of washing (like how many in a load), necessity of diaper covers?, and if its possible with a busy schedule... i dont know anyone personally who uses them, i heard its lighter on th wallet than pampers but im trying to figure out if its really practical for my life.... i ALREADY know the benefits, i need to know from experience what REALLY goes on...
How to best treat discoloration of a wool cloth-diaper cover? My kid's wool cover, for his cloth-diapers, has discolored over the past year or so, due to constant contact with urine. We wash the covers about once a month. Is there a way to restore the cover back, without destroying the cover or the environment, to its original color...or at least as close as possible? Thanks! :' )
Cloth diapering- cleaning poopy diapers- how to do? So, I am new to cloth diapering and only get to do it when at home and on weekends. I am cleaning poop for the first time. The poop mostly just came off into the toilet, but it was a bit gooey. Am I supposed to put soap and rub on it? Pre-treat and soak it? I put some soap and rubbed, but after I washed this load the diaper still smelled awful. So, I must have done something wrong. I feel silly, but I would appreciate if you could tell me what you do and what you use to wash them out? For regular diaper washes I use either Charlie's soap or 7th generation free and clear.
It takes us 5 days to go through 15 cloth diapers. Is 5 days to long to let them sit between washings? On most cloth diapering forums it says that you should wash them at least every three days. So I bought 15 diapers thinking that would last me 3 days or less. However my little guy is a light wetter and barely goes through 3 cloth diapers per day so it takes us 5 days to make a full load of diapers to wash. Is there anything wrong with waiting this long to wash them? Like could too much bacteria grow on them, or will the odor set in and not wash out, or could it damage the the diaper. He wears fuzzi bunz. We are new to cloth so any suggestions help. Thanks Thanks for all of the suggestions so far. I just wanted to add that he is not dehydrated he drinks about 35 ounces of breastmilk a day. the doctor says as long as he has two wet diapers per day it is fine. He also pees on me at least twice day and at least twice during his hour bath so he does urinate just not always in a diaper. Could I rinse them and leave them in the washer full of water for three days or could that damage my washing machine. I do not want to do the wet pail thing and i have heard you are never supposed to use any kind of bleach on cloth diapers no matter how small the amount.
How much do you spend on diapers (name brand) per month for a newborn? I'm pregnant with our second, and I forget how much we spent on diapers in the early days. I want to use cloth for this second baby, but we wont have our own washer/dryer until a while after it is born. I'm trying to weigh the cost of paying to wash cloth diapers vs. the cost of disposables. My estimate is that washing cloth diapers will cost me about $53/month until we get our own machines. About how much do you spend on disposbable diapers a month, for a newborn?
handwashing cloth diapers? I would rather hand wash my diapers to save energy and use less water, is there a certain way i can do this to ensure they are REALLY clean? I heard something about baking soda and vinegar. Keep in mind they use to do this back in the day so i know it is possible....any ideas would be great! :)
Cloth diaper organization.? As a mother who uses cloth diapers in the home, I often wonder to myself how other cloth diapering mothers did things in their homes. "Did you keep all of your babies diapering things folded, and inside a baby dresser"? "Did you keep all the diapers, pins, rubber pants, wash cloths, etc, on top of the baby's dresser"? "Did you just keep certain things for diapering in the dresser"? "Where did you keep the diaper pail"? For years now I have more or less kept a day or two's supply of diapers folded and ready on top of the dresser, along with extra pairs of rubber pants, (maybe 3-4 pairs), a couple extra sets of safety pins, the powder, some wash cloths, and the diaper rash ointment. Extra diapers are kept folded and tucked away inside diaper stackers in the baby's closet, and the diaper pail is kept inside the bathroom. Looking to pick up some new ideas to use in my home regarding baby care.
cloth diapers or disposable diapers, and why? i was talking to my husband about using cloth cause alot of babies get rashes, alergies to diapers. and also they are so expensive. so if i were to choose cloth how do you wash them, what do you do when they are poopy...lol...when i was little they had diaper service. so wich would you choose is the best way to go? i just feel that at 10 dollars for 12 cloth diapers is not bad and if you buy say 100 dollars worth you are still saving money right?
Cloth diapers? Has anyone used Baby Love one-size all-in-one cloth diapers? I wonder if one-size really works or if there are leaks. I found some really affordable Baby Love AIOs and also some really affordable diaper covers and thought that I would try a combination of the two (with prefolds and snappies). I'm 25 weeks pregnant with my first and have never cloth diapered before. I'm trying to save money and help the environment. Some of these AIOs are so expensive! What kind of cloth diapers did/do you use? Do you recommend any products over others? Did you use a diaper laundry service or wash at home? There are just so many choices out there. Any advise would be great!
Smelly cloth diapers??? We use Kushies AIO cloth diapers. I soak them in cold water and vinegar in the diaper pail. I then wash them with very hot water and more vinegar in the washing machine. Then I hang them out to dry. Still, they smell aweful! Is there anything else that is safe to wash them in? I dont want them to loose absorbency, or deteriorate due to harsh chemicals, but I do want them clean!
cloth diapers? I think cloth diapers are a great idea. How does the whole operation work? What do you do with the poop and pee? What do you do with the diapers? Do you just wash a load of those separately in the washer? How does the pee not soak through if it's just cloth? Please let me know as I am thinking of switching for the money and the environment, but don't really know what to do.
Managing cloth diapers in public? Not being a parent myself, and having no experience with this, I have to ask. Many people choose cloth diapers for both their babies and the environment. I'm curious, how do they deal with a dirty cloth diaper out in public? Do they wash it in a public restroom sink? Do they put it in a sealed plastic bag and take it with them? I don't imagine other people nearby would be happy about either option.
Cloth Diapers? New to cloth diapering just curious how to wash them for the first time.
Cloth Diapers - the Basics? I have visited several of the "getting started with cloth" websites, but I am still confused. I'm trying to decide the right way to go, but I can't figure out the laundering process! So these are my questions: If you buy prefolds and covers, you have to wash the prefold every time, but not the cover until it needs it - so you would need only around 6 or 8 covers? This seems to me the cheapest way to go, am I right? If you buy all-in-one's, do you have to wash the whole thing every time, or you only have to wash the insert every time? Same question on pocket diapers - do you have to wash the outside part every time, or is there just an insert you can wash? If you can't just wash the insert, this seems much more expensive. Any experience with the ones that grow with baby by snapping into different sizes? Do they really last the whole time? Do you have to wash the outside of them each time, or just an insert? Do ones with velcro or snaps hold up better? Thanks!
Cloth Diapers?? I have a 9 month old daughter. When we first had her I was all for disposable diapers but as I have used them I hate them. I am pregnant with my second child and I have thought maybey I would give cloth diapers a shot. I need to know what to buy. They make the cloth ones but there so thin. Everyone in my family has used disposables so no help there. Also when you change baby do you soak the diapers? Do they stain when you wash them? I would really love some input on this. Okay what do you mean soak them in a pail? Like a bucket? If thats the case when I have my second child my girl will only be 15 mths and I would be worried that she would drown. Could I put them in something with a lid?
Cloth diaper washing boost? I am looking to give my diaper wash a boost. I use Purex Free abd Clear detergent. Do you use both baking soda and vinegar? I tried yesterday putting baking soda in the prewash and vinegar in the rinse. When I opened the washer they had this awefully funny smell, and I had to run another rinse. What do you do to boost your laundy and avoid funny smells?
Choosing a cloth diaper layette.? For those of you who went the route of cloth diapers for your children, what did your cloth diaper layette consist of? Here's an overview of what I had for my first baby when I was starting out. 4 dozen standard flat cloth diapers. (Great for burping too). 8 pairs of rubber pants. (Pull-on style). 6 sets of diaper pins. 1 diaper pail. A dozen baby wash cloths. 1 box of flushable diaper liners. (Great for those new baby meconium poops). As time went by and as I needed certain things, I just went out and bought them. Hard to believe I'm on baby #3 and still using cloth diapers. Shame on everyone who told me I wouldn't be able to make it with cloth diapering.
What can I use in the 'wet' storage method of cloth diapers? My 17 month old daughter can tell me when she has to poop and when she has pooped. Today was her second time going poop on the potty. I am starting to use cloth diapers on her to try to get her to feel wet, but just started today and it's been fun LOL. I am curious what I can use (like baking soda?) in the 'wet' method of storing the diapers until they get washed, to keep out the smell. I know there is a dry method but I'm not really interested in using that method.
Parents who use cloth diapers - how do you get out spots? I have a few prefolds that got diarrhea stained and I keep pretreating and sending them through the wash hoping that this time they'll come out nice and snowy, but the spots are still there. I inspect them for spots before tossing in the dryer and when one still has spots, I redo the pretreatment and put it in the pail to get re-washed with the next load. What do you do with your cloth diapers to get out stubborn spots and stains? I've tried OxyClean, Totally Toddler stain pretreater, Baking Soda, plus regular detergent in various combinations over the course of a few loads of diapers. We know that regular bleach can't be used on cloth diapers - what else can I try? It's still too cold here for a clothesline, and once it warms up there's too much pollen so I don't think that will work. Thanks!
To those who use cloth diapers..? I was wondering what the pros/cons are? The worst I can think of are stinky diapers...having to wash them...how do you handle that? How many diapers do you have to buy, on average? How hard are they to learn to fold? Any info would be great, thank you.
cloth or disposable diapers? moms, i would like to start a debate right here (tada) in this question about diapers. just a few facts, did you know that disposiable diapers are not ment to hold the poop in the trash, you are suppose to shake it off in the toilet jsut like a cloth diaper; reason; because the poop ends up in our land fills and poultes the ground with human pathogens and increasing the risk of the spread of disease. also, it take 500 years for a disposible diaper to biodegrate and 18-23 billion are thrown away each year. in time for the first years of diapers to biodegrate, 8,500,000,000,000-11,000,000,000,000 will be degrating still. we all know that diapers wernt around for 500 years and that they wont be for much longer, but could you imagine??? please just post opnions, not hate. as for me, i use old fashioned cloth diapers and covers. they work just fine for us. i use chemical free detergent adn viniger to wash, it only takes 20 minutes to dry them and about 60 to wash them. i only wash one... load every other day and it take no effort to fold, its harder to hang shirts, IMO..... hahahah, dont you like how there are sooo many 0's in the second number that the computer just put ...... after it!!!! there were 12 of them.... haha, to CK. your right, we need golf.......ya know, more than our planet. giggle~~~ winnie, you have never tried them, i assume, because i thought the same thing but they are so easy to use, if not easier, you dont put poo in your washing machine and that is why i expalined that you dont use a lot of extra enengy because you only really have to do it every other day and a lot of peeps hang dry. can you believe that the first disposiable was made in 1942, and was make to only hold one wetting??? aww, i would never bleach a diaper, thats why you had rashes, thats crazy!! ahhhhhh! sun dry to get stains out silly!
Cloth Diapers? Can you help me out PLEASE? I just got some cloth diapers yesterday from a nonprofit group who lends cloth diapers to those who want to use it, but cant afford the upfront cost! Heres the deal, i have NO clue how to use these diapers! I've got some all in ones (AIO) and fitted, and i've got the extra pad to go in the diaper, covers, and wipes. They gave some kushies? which seem like it's all in one, but to me, it looks like if i put it on my son, and he takes a #2, it will go all over the place! I am totally lost, as i didnt get any instructions, other then how to wash! I am no dummy, but im just overwhemled whith these! With the AIO's, do i put the pad inside, so it is not directly touching my son, or is that what goes up against his skin? (there is a pocket in the diaper) But some pictures i've seen, it shows the pad as touching the skin! OK, if your lost now, i am too! Does anyone have any sites that help new cloth diaper uses how to use these, other then put them on the baby!? If you use cloth, what are some tricks that you use? Do they leak? How often do you wash them? Any comments in regards to their use would be more then helpful right now. EDIT: And when i asked how often do you wash them, obviously when they are dirty, but do you wait till most are dirty? Wash them with normal wash? Or just diapers?
Cloth diapering: using prefolds with pocket diapers? I'm pregnant with my 3rd child, considering the switch to cloth diapers. First two kids were well over 8lbs at birth, long and skinny whole life, 3rd kid will probably follow suit, if that affects what products you recommend. I've just about decided on BumGenius One-size 3.0, but I'm wondering why the inserts for any pocket diapers HAVE to go inside the pocket? Why can't you just put the insert (or a prefold folded in thirds) on top? We've done this with disposable doublers with disposable diapers before with success, but just for overnight wetting on older babies. It would seem to me that the absorbency would be where you need it, any stains would be on the insert and not the diaper itself, and it would make laundering easier since you wouldn't have to separate them to wash and dry and then put them back together. Does it move too much that way? More likely to leak? I can't be the first person to have thought of this, so there must be a reason this method isn't publicized.
Cloth Diapers and using Dreft? I have heard many conficting views on which detergent really is the best to use for washing cd's. I've been using All free and Clear and I've had some issues with leaking. I've started using Dreft which my mother in law suggested and have had no problems thus far. I also use a 1/4 cup of baking soda and a downy ball 1/2 full of vinager( only opens in rinse cycle) in every wash. Is Dreft really that bad to use? If it's ok for baby clothes why not cloth diapers? Oh and my baby has not had any diaper rash form using Dreft either.
Cloth diapers? I was wondering what you need to get started with cloth diapers. I was looking into it to save some money since I am having twins, I dont mind extra loads of wash or having to clean poop off. I am a little confused on what I would need to buy. There are the pre folds, covers, other diaper looking things. I am really at a lost. I went to different web sites and they say to buy diapers but what part is the diaper and what do I need covers with. Thanks
Diaper covers for cloth diapers? I am going to use cloth diapers when my little one gets here and I just a have a question... What is the best diaper cover you use.. and what is the cheepest way to do it..? Do you use a Pro Wrap (that only fits that size then) or do you go ahead and get a wonder wrap (that fits all stages) ???? Because also with the wonder wrap it has cloth inside already.. I am looking for something like the prowrap that you can just wipe off and put another insert in and wash the wrap about once a week... Just what do you think is the cheepest way!

How do you strip cloth diapers? I am pretty sure I have buildup causing a horrible ammonia smell of the diaper, the moment my baby goes pee it REEKS. I know it's not the baby's pee itself b/c if there's an accident on the floor and I sop up with a towel, it doesn't have the strong ammonia odor. We use mainly fitteds, stuffed with an assortment of flats, prefolds, washrags, and microfiber towels. We use PUL and fleece covers. I have been washing without detergent for about 2 weeks. I have been rinsing once in cold water with 1/2 c vinegar before washing, then washing once in hot with 1/2 c baking soda or borax + 1/4 c vinegar + 1/2 tsp tea tree oil. and drying on high heat. So I know they need stripped. I am working on getting detergent (I have to make ours as we're allergic to the commercial detergents) so no criticism for that please. Just describe to me how you strip your cloth diapers. Thanks so much.

Cloth Diapers? I have done a little reading on cloth diapers, and so far I have heard many great things about them, so im thinking about using them for my baby, Im only 9 weeks perg. so i have a while to think about it, but I was wondering a few things. Is there anyone who tried them and just didnt like them (for a reason other then having to wash them)? How much harder are they to wash then a normal load of laundry? How much cheaper are they then dispoable ones? Do you ever have trouble folding them right or keeping them on your baby? Thanks a lot, I of course will do more research on the subject!
i want to try to use cloth diapers, i jsut have a few questions? i was looking into the all in one with pockets that you jsut wash and put on the baby again. but i was also looking into gerber plastic covers and prefolds. i dont think i would like them as much but i was looking for somthing a little less expencive, the good brand of cloth diapers (the all in one easy to use things) are soooo expencive, even off of ebay. i dont think it would help in the long run. we only pay $20 for a pack of disposible paper diapers (luvs) adn we get 120 in the box. one cloth diaper can cost as much as 1 box of diapers. has anyone used the gerber covers adn the prefolds? waht do you suggest i do?i have always wanted to give cloth diaper a try, im all about saving money. what do you think? im about saving money adn i hear that cloth diapers are suppose to be less expencive but i dont see that? why? well, crazy, i use them for that too. thats when i got to thinking about jsut trying cloth diapers, but is does seem like a lot of work
Cloth diapers? I would just like to know the ins and outs of cloth diapers. How they work; what detergent to use; what kind of fold is best; best brand; best material; most economical use; where to get them; what do we need to use them;how to wash them; pretty much everything you could think of; we would like to know. thank you.
Cloth diapers are they worth all the fuss? ive been looking up Cloth diapers and seeing if they are worth getting and on eof the kinds say that you can only use them for 30 days or maybe thats just the garuntee (kushies) i dont understand i know how to wash them and and put them on but what is the best kind to use like the ones with disposible liners or the mirofiber insert ones or what help please!! Thank you Angel L
What do you like about cloth diapers? How much does it cost you? I currently have my 4 month old using disposables and I'm thinking about possibly switching to cloth. What was your start-up cost for buying the diapers, and do you use the velcro pants that go overtop? Also, what do you find the advantages to be of buying cloth? We don't have a diaper service business in my city, so I'd be washing them myself. What are the disadvantages? Is diaper rash more likely? My daughter was born 6 weeks early, and I had yet to research my diapering options. Therefore, the quick and easy option at the time was disposables. I'm not certain that I'll switch now, but at least I'll be better informed by the time we have a second little baby.
Cloth Diapers? Ok I have a couple more questions. How many would I need to get started if I chose to get the All In One Diaper if I wash them every night. Also they are a bit pricey so how long before they pay for themselves.
Disposable diapers versus cloth diapers, what nonsense? I've never before heard such nonsense and rubish when it comes to pitting one against the other. I hear it all the time, "Oh if you use cloth diapers, you use so much water". Or, "All the laundry soap and washing and drying". People are so small minded. I guess there's no water used whatsoever in the pulp and paper process of manufacturing disposable diapers. (Ya right). Oh and of course, there's no other environmental concerns from big corporations poluting our waterways and water table systems. (Ya right once again). What about baby's comfort? I wouldn't dream of wearing disposables myself, so why would I put my baby in them? Their scatchy, rough, fit poorly, and look pathetic, never mind the asinine expense of affording them. I'm not at all against mothers who use disposable diapers, to each their own. But when people throw off the cuff comments around when they don't know what their talking about, it causes me to question people's sanity. Ignorance is not a virtue.
Few questions on cloth diapers? I plan on trying cloth diapers and want to save the money and launder them myself. Hoping some mommies will be willing to share with me how they go about doing so? Do the diapers soak in water until they're ready to go in the washing machine? How do you dry them? Thanks much!!!
cloth diapers? Im thinking about using them but I know absolutely nothing about them. How many should I buy? How often do they need to be changed? (I use diposable, and I change my son about every hour) What all do I need to buy? (diapers, covers...anything else?) Machine wash or hand wash? I basically need someone to tell me exactly..Im clueless!
Poop in cloth diapers -- a routine hassle, or moreso thanks to these dipes, or using a front-loader? I've started partially cloth diapering, and a couple of poops have made it into some leg gathers and...yeah, fun. It doesn't come out too easily. It either needs a hand-scrubbing or several goes through the machine. Baby is EBF, not on solids yet, for what that's worth. Is that (a) a normal hassle of cloth diapering, (b) a diaper design flaw (they are all-in-ones), (c) something that would be better in a top-loading washing machine rather than the front-loader I'm using? These: http://www.alltogetherdiaper.com/all_in_ones.asp ...decently reviewed, but cheap... forgot to add: it IS actual poop traces, not just staining. Yum. :-P
Cloth diapering on vacation? I was wondering what other cloth diapering mamas do when going out of town? Do you just use disposables. do you visit laundromats, or do you rough it and hand wash the diapers? Hubby and I are planning a vacation and I have been thinking about what we are going to do. I really don't want to use disposables, but wonder if going through the trouble of finding a laundromat may be frustrating. Need some tips. Thanks!
Cloth Diaper Help? I'm totoally clueless when it comes to cloth. My nine month old has had a rash for months now. After trying every cream perscription and not and every brand of sposie. I made the decision to switch to cloth. My husband doesn't like the idea and thinks I will have nothing but leaks and diaper washing every day...Oh and I forgot to mention he's a penny pincher when it comes to something he doesn't approve of. So I will be making my own dipes and have lots of questions I haven't found answers too. Do fitted diapers need covers? What in the world is a cover? I know the general idea but does it have to be special fabric or just anything so you have an extra layer? What is PUL? I know its fabric but thats about it. What is the best type of diaper to use? I would prefer not to use pins. For night time would a prefold stuck in another diaper work well? Just an FYI the baby has kidney problems and pees as much as a newborn. Where can I find the best pattern? What fabrics are best to use? Whats the difference between an AIO and fitted? Any other suggestions you have for a beginner?
Cloth diapers? Are they worth it? How much money do they save you? How do you wash them? along with the other clothes?
Making cloth diapers? I've been making them for my 9 month old. The instructions I have say to use fleece on the inner layer, flannel on the outside, and a soaker in the middle. The fleece almost always feels dry, but the flannel is always soaked! I've about given up due to the number of outfits my daughter goes through in a day. I've been using the Gerber covers from Walmart, but they tear so easily in the wash, and I just don't like them. What fabrics do you use, and what do you use as a cover?
I just got my cloth diapers in the mail! Now what? 6 chinese prefolds and two covers. I've read several ways to wash/prewash the chinese prefolds and that they need to be washed anywhere from 3-8 times to get started, and some say dry between each wash, some say dont..HELP PLEASE! I'm confused
